February 1, 1973
PRESENT Mr Gaughan, Mr. Lord, Mrs. Litchfield, Mrs Reed, Mr Brenchick,
( ) Mr Fitzgerald and Mrs Hall.
VISITOR. Mr Neil Cronin, Chairman, Parade Advisory Committee
PATRIOTS DAY:
Col. Harrington of Fort Devens advised us that there wee a good possibility that
the Air Force would transport the 45-man Colonial Marching Unit from Pt. Meyers,
Virginia. Plans are still being formulated for this group to march in both
Concord and Lexington. There is no definite commitment as yet, however.
The Aleppo Temple will bring the same Aleppo unite as came last year plus their
band The Committee voted to offer them $400.00 for all the Aleppo units and
band combined.
St Theresa's Jr. & Sr. Drill Teams will come. Their leader suggests a group
called The Leathernecks from the Malden/Everett area. The group is comprised
of 50-60 boys, 10-15 years of age, who form a Drum and Bugle Corps They will
be invited to march with us for the cost of their transportation only, and
will be advised that they will be previewed for our 1975 parade.
We will invite the Methuen High School Cadet Corps, Ranger Band (80 pieces) ,
and Drill Team, again for the cost of their transportation only, and advising
them they will be previewed for our 1975 parade.
) Both Rainbow and Demolay marching units will in our Sunrise and afternoon parades;
J Demolay may have a float in the afternoon parade also.
This year's parade theme is: BUILDING FOR TOMORROW.
The Committee discussed having a marching unit and band from each of the armed
services' branches leading each of the five divisions of our afternoon parade
To this end, Mrs Litchfield will write to the Commandant at the Coast Guard
Academy in New London, Connecticut and to the Commanding Officer at the
Massachusetts Maritime Academy and ask if they would be interested in sending
us a marching unit and band this year, with an aye toward 1975's parade.
Mr. Cronin and the Committee members discussed the 1975 parade and its proposed
route at length. The Committee agrees the new route is an excellent one, but
feels it should be marched in reverse; we feel it is psychologically damaging
for parade units to go by the reviewing stand within five minutes of the start
of the parade. A gradual build-up to pass the reviewing stand toward the end
of a parade makes for a snappier looking parade overall. Also, any celebrities
who are marching should be exposed to the public for a good part of he parade
route, rather than marching for a few minutes and then leaving the formation
for the reviewing stand.
Our Committee, having read this week's Minute-Man paper, feel that the traditional
Youth Parade should take place on the 19th in 1975, rather than be scheduled on
the following Monday. Could it not precede the Centennial Legion Parade which
Vis to step off at 9am that morning?
Respectfully submitted,
Marilyn L. Hall, Recording Secretary
