CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES of Commission meeting November 1, le71.
The meeting was called to order by the Chairman. Mr. Brown, with
Mr. Cohen, Mrs. Frick, Dr. Kassler and Mrs. Rawls present, as
well as associate members Mesdames Nichols and Solomon and Messrs.
Friedman and Smith. Rene Cochin and Paula Alden were observing
for the League of Women Voters.
Secretary' s Bill of $122.92 for 48 hours work and $2.92 postage,
supplies and telephone APPROVED.
Communications received from Air Pollution Committee on proposal
for Environmental Protection group to take its place (informal
meeting November 7, followed by official meeting November 18) . . .
from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on standards (addressed
to the Air Pollution Committee) . . .from the Charles River Watershed
Association telling of their next meeting November 3 evening at
the Browne and Nichols School.. .from the Burlington Board of
Selectmen a copy of their letter to Lexington Board of Select-
men requesting cooperation in prevention of highway salt runoff
into the Vine Brook. Commission agreed to write our Lexington
Board of Selectmen asking results of last year' s reduction and/
or elimination of salt in selected areas around town. . . .
From Benton Phelps, a 20-year resident of Lexsngton, offer to
be of service to the Commission. His training includes study of
wildlife and of computer technology. The Chairman will invite
him to a meeting.
Name Your Land recommendations have been received from Edwin B.
Worthen - with some historical references on several parcels and
advice on how the Commission might do some of its own historical (of
research - from Royal D. Chandler, from whom the Commission pur- (Monument

Meeting Room. Drawbacks and advantages of current meeting room
and repository of files noted. Concern was expressed that the
Commission may have problems when the 1975 celebrations committee
is in full operation. Those working on maps and plans would like
to have a place to work and store materials. Mrs. Greene pointed
out that the newly acquired file was locked despite attached in-
structions not to do so. The cost of fitting a new key is beyond
the Commission' s budget.
Reimbursement Receipts. During the spring months the Town received
nearly $200,000 in conservation land reimbursements. This has
never been publicized because exact amounts and detailed breakdowns
have not been available until recently. Mr. Brown will reconfirm
the exact figures so that the Minute Man can report them.
Channel Easement along Vine Brook. Mr. Smith, brought in the sheet

describing the terms of the channel easement " to construct
sewers , drains, conduits . . " to change t e course of the brook.
Filling would rot he prevented. Mr. Friedman took the page to
show it to the Planning Board. The remaining several pages of
the easement descri e the ooundaries of the easement.
Planning Board is now completing their open space plan and will
be sending it to the Commission for inspection. They wutld like
to meet with the Commission on November 15 to discuss it. Time
will be 8 30 p.m.
Ford Foundation grants will be available to local conservation
commissions and conservation groups, it was announced in the New
York Times October 30 , 1971. Brownell of DNA will be in charge
of selection of groups to benefit. Mr. Friedman will make in-
quiries to see if more details are available in printed form.
Hatch Act. Commission members urged that the Sanderson Road
area be watched to make sure that application and hearing are
held before any more work is done in the area.
Minutes of the October 25, 1971 open session approved as submitted.
Executive session was declared at 8 27 . At 9 00 p.m. the Commission
departed to meet in executive session with the Board of Selectmen,
followed by an executive session with the Capital Expenditures
Committee. Adjournmentcecured at 10 45 p.m. The next meeting of
the Commission will be on Monday , November 8 , 1971 at 7 45 p.m.
