CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES of the Commission meeting June 9, 1970
The meeting was called to order by the Chairman, Mr. Brown
at 8 00 p m , with Mrs. Frick and Messrs Mazerall and Smith
of the Commission, Town Manager O'Connell and visitors from
the Citizens for Lexington Conservation Neva Reiner and
Manfred Friedman
Waste Disposal Projects TheCLC visitors reported that their
organization is studying not only the feasibility of a Town
compost but also the possibility of having a trailer at the
dump to collect salvageable paper, thus possibly extending
the life of the dump
Brook Cleaning Mrs Frick asked how to insure that future
brook cleaning operations could be accomplished without whole-
sale bulldozing of trees and shrubs
Great Meadow Study A report meeting with the Arlington Great
Meadow Study Committee has been arranged for Wednesday evening
June 10 , at 7 45 in the Arlington Branch Library. Jason Cor-
tell and a representative from Camp, Dresser & McKee will give
a progress report. Mrs Frick and Dr. Kassler plan to attend,
along with Fred Friedman
A question about the monthly bills and their relation to the
work contract with CD&McK arose, but it could not be answered
because a copy of the contract could not be found in the file.
VOTED to pay Lexington' s share of the May bill - $160 50.
Progress on State and Federal reimbursement applications
DNR 8& 10 - Sent in June 5
OSA 51 - All papers are in order, except for one $500
check which cannot be counted and Mr. Legro' s letter
on clear title cannot be supplied because of upcoming
litigation. Partial grant may be awarded
OSA 60 - Mr. Brown and Mrs. Frick had a most educational
tour with Mr. Bates of HUD Tuesday , June 2 HUD
concurrence in Price should be arriving in the next
few weeks. It is unwise , they learned to have widely
disparate appraisals of one pice of property, (For
specific recommendations on appraisers, see File No
1-8 Appraisers & Appraisals)
The seven unpurchased properties were enumerated with
comments by the Town Manager
Steeves - slight delay because of lien

Hinds (BB&N) option exercised June 3
Area option exercised in February p
Valleyfield & Crawford differences on sewer and other
matters will be settled soon
Buse - will be taken by eminent domain - Mr. Brown
gave Mr O'Connell two appraisals to transmit to
the Board of Selectmen
Needed documents are still in the Town Counsel' s backlog
School Site West of Maple Street. Maps will soon be forth-
coming to facilitate a meeting of minds on uses of the land
for education, conservation and development.
Radcliffe Study All those who attended the final seminar
of Joseph Volpe's study of Lexington were tremendously im-
pressed. Many Town boards and officials cooperated exten-
sively, and $25,000 worth of study was donated to the Town.
It is hoped that the displays and maps will be shown soon
in the Piper Gallery of the Library, Mrs. Frick reported.
Local DNR. Legislation has been passed permitting towns
to established local Departments of Natural Resources. This
is something to think about , stated Mr O'Connell.
Pollution Committee. New state regulations to curtail all
forms of pollution are being promulgated in the near future.
These will pose problems on the local level , since local
authorities are being requested to enforce them. Mr O'Con-
nell cited prohibitions of certain types of paints and
regulations on the idling of truck motors as examples. Mrs.
Greene expressed uncertainty over the role of the present
Committee on Air Pollution as the new District and regula-
tions take effect. Mrs Greene noted that other towns do
have pollution committees related to their conservation
commissions.
Meetings from now through August , it was agreed, will take
place in the Town Manager' s trailer, starting June 15, and
also on June 29 (omit the previously scheduled June 22) ,
July 13 and 27 and August 10 and 24
In brief A tour of the Juniper Basin has not yet happened. . .
Report of the erection of two signs in Swenson Farm will ap-
pear in the Minute Man. Vandals have started to scratch the
sign on Allen Street , but the Marrett Rd. sign is still in
good condition and admired by all viewers . Vandalism at the
Old Res and ways the Town hopes to control it were discussed
briefly. .A Directive from the Town Manager on approval of
purchases of over $50 before purchase was mentioned.
