CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES of the Commission meeting October 19, 1970
The meeting was called to order by the Vice-Chairman, Mr. Smith,
with Mrs Frick, Dr Kessler and Messrs Sussman and Mazerall
present. Visitors were Don Deily and Mrs Joan Crothers of the
League of Women Voters and the Citizens for Lexington Conservation
Minutes and Action List Agreed an action list should be prepared
by Mrs Greene once a month and sent out with the minutes .
Options requested. A copy of Mr Legro' s letter of September 24,
apparently received by the Town Manager on October 2 and received
by Mr. Smith last week, raised questions about the option for
the Drummer Boy Land Reference was made to a plan notyet seen
by members of the Conservation Commission and to communications
between Mr. Legro and Mr Conolly about which the Commission had
no report It was agreed that Mr. Smith should answer Mr. Legro' s
questions in a letter to the Board of Selectmen, using our letter
to Mr. O'Connell of 4/14/70 , with the attached letter of 3/23/70
from Conolly of O'Neida Corp as references. Mr Smith will re-
commend that Hadley Road and various other easements be located
before conveyance and it should be so stipulated in the option.
Mr. Smith will also send a letter to the Board of Selectmen re-
questing options be drawn on the Soule and Frissore parcels.
Recreation Committee Mrs. Frick and Mr Mazerall reported on
the lengthy Recreation Committee they attended last week and
continued earlier this evening. The Committee expressed concern
that most of the conservation land in the Eldred Street area
is wet. After consulting the map, Commission members spotted
some high ground at the intersection of Bernard and Justin Streets.
It was decided to write the Recreation Committee about this loca-
tion and also to recommend, as Mr. Sussman suggested, that measure-
ment of air pollution levels might be advisable in view of the
proximity to Route 128. The Recreation Committee will be re-
quested to submit their plans for the tot lot and/or skating
area on the former Advent Christian Church land in writing to
the Conservation Commission Furthermore , both HUD and the DNR
will have to be contacted about the recreation plans before
work can go ahead. (NOTE Check not yet received for DNR
reimbursement and final Requisition for Grant has not yet been
sent to HUD for this land! )
OSA-60 The Commission asked Mrs. Greene to look into the pos-
sibility of obtaining a substitute for cancelled checks for
some of the properties , since it looks as if some may not be ob-
tainable by December 1.
Planning Board. It was agreed that another meeting with the
Planning Board in the near future would be mutually beneficial.
Brook Cleanup An article will appear in the Minute Man on Thurs-
day and another, with picture , will appear next week, giving in-
structions on equipment to wear and bring. Dr Kessler and Mr
Conservation Commission minutes 10/19/70 Page 2
Mazerall will walk the area together to ascertain what needs to
be done with what tools. They will also look for additional
areas which could be tackled in case a large and energetic
crowd turns out
The Citizens for Lexington Conservation discussed the project
at their Board meeting last week; the League of Women Voters
will put a notice in their Bulletin, which should arrive a
day or two before the event; school children will hear the
news on Monday, October 26.
Excavation below West Farm Cart Road Since no word had been
received on action taken about the severe cut threatening the
old cart road along the edge of the West Farm, Mrs Greene was
requested to send another memo about this to Mr O ' Connell ,
with a copy to Mr McSweeney
Water-Testing Activity along with picture-taking has been noted
by two meter-readers of brooks flowing into the Great Meadow
Mrs. Frick ascertained that it was not in connection with the
Great Meadow Study. Other Commission members speculated that
the white truck may have come at the request of the Department
of Natural resources or may have some connection with Mr. Wilson' s
complaint about salt from the highway polluting his water source.
Polaroid Camera. Commission members suggested that a worthwhile
project of an organization such as the Citizens for Lexington
Conservation would be the aquisition of a polaroid camera for
ever-handy picture taking An immediate use for such a camera
would be "before" and "after" pictures of the Brook Cleanup Day
area. A camera could also verify complaints.
The meeting adjourned to executive session at 9 30 p.m
The next Commission meeting will be Monday, October 26 , 1970
at 7 45 p m. in the committee meeting room, second floor rear,
Police Station Building
Respectfully submitted,
gr,-et e,
