The committee, authorized by the Board of Selectmen on
May 9, 1966, to study the Stanley Hill Post #38, American
Legion' s request for an Honor Roll on the lawn in front of
Cary Memorial Buildin , and its request to name the Public
Facilities Building, "Veterans' Memorial Building", has
made a survey of the existing Honor Rolls in Town.
There are now Honor Rolls for those who lost their lives
in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and World Wet I located
in Cary Memorial Building. As far as World War II is concerned,
there is a Veterans' Memprial located in the Senior High School
with an Honor Roll incorporated in it, and there is also an album
listing all of those who served in the Armed Forces of World
War II . The committee feels this meMof at is very appropriate
and should not be changed in any way.
The committee recommends further that the Town compile
an album for those who served in the Korean conflict and also
an Honor Roll for those who gave their lives in that conflict.
These, the committee feels, should be displayed somewhere in
Cary Memorial Hall.
With reference to an Honor Roll for those now serving in
the Armed Forces, the committee recommends no aotion be taken
at this time. It feels the Town should adopt the policy of
keeping a record of all those serving our country and inserting
the names in an album just as the one now available for veterans
of World War II . However, it does feel that Lexington should
have an Honor Roll for those who gave their lives in the present
conflict, whether here or overseas.
The last two suggestions could be implemented by requesting
the Veterans' Officer to compile the information and submit it
to the Board for final implementation.
The committee discussed the suggestion of naming the Public
Facilities Building, "Veterans' Memorial Building". It does not
feel this would be an appropriate memorial for those who made such
sacrifices for their country. Although the committee recommends
against naming this building, it does feel Lexington should have a
Veterans' Memorial, and as a basis of discussion, suggests that a
memori ,l,similar to the evolution ry Me oriel, be placed in Emery
Park. '
