fee 7e .,
The Public Works Building Committee wishes to make the
following report and recommendations to the Board of. Select-
men The committee has been studying for a considerable period
of time the problems connected with the lack of adequate
facilities at the Town barn on Bedford Street . This report
will bring the Board of Selectmen up to date on the progress of
the study and present certain recommendations to the Board for
its consideration.
1 The Public Works Department administration should remain in
its present location. The reasons for this recommendation
are as follows
A By moving the Public Works Department adminstration
it would not solve the space problem at the Town Offices
B By moving it to Bedford Street, it would be creating
traffic and personnel problems at that location
C. Stronger supervision can be accomplished regardless of
move .
2 The Town barn should remain in its present location
A The present building is structurally sound
B The present building can easily be adapted to
any expansion program.
C. The land area available at Bedford. Street is adequate
D Public acceptance. of the present location
E. Present site is centrally located,
F No financial advantage in. moving particularly in light
of the Planning Board report The eget of site acquisition
and site development is an important factor N,
G Eighteen potential sites were reviewed by the committee
and three were found usable The sites examined included
the Maney property on Bedford Street
3 Space requirements submitted by the Superintendent of Public Works
are justified for the following reasons
A Expansion of the Public Works Department in the years to
come in men and equipment
B Potential acquisition of school buses and rubbish trucks
C Storage facilities for Civil Defense organization in
addition to requirements of Superintendent of Public Works
D Present inadequacy of existing facilities for men and
equipment .
E Additional 26,000 square footage requested does not mean
it must all be new construction The committee feels that
alteration and structural changes within the existing build-
ing will provide some of the additional footage needed
F. Moving of the Park Department from the Buckman Tavern
