Mr. Cortell made an e tonsive presentation, complete with cola' slides, which depicter ,ATO'd his Sroup had done to ravo'o ponds and lakos safe an enjoyable '!'or swimildn , qoteable amont,, these were 1 'Aewton, Isliosloy, 4akefield, WV “ pedalo. He feels that the device used In Crystal Le a, Nowton center, to provide pure bthin water would be applicablu here. This i an irticifical flow-inducer, which stimulates a continuous passayo or water throuo;n the bathin &yea. The 7n:ItuTal (*Arians-In i, ctton available withir the pond is then said to hrive opportunity to act upin the rater used by tno batho/ s. Tie dovico also ,lausez, aeration, which ho ins even more. The flow-induar is also use in tie dispors1 V chlorine, he3bieldes, and (for tests on ) COieri °.,AfoVsi o;' thf ds-,le vas discued, mai tt appeared that etonstve prec utions, 1,oth wecbanical nac olectvical, had bot,n taken to ensure an qh?,erce of f',ontYerous conditions. The Newton installation is described in Amorican f-'11;y, July 1961. Mr. cortoll 's I.Jalimintqy investlgat.lon indicated that the aquatic weeds aro not OYcessiye and are Of the easily-controlled type. He I repeated what 11,- , hr.d told the Consoivut,,on Cmxission at its July 27 meting. I Cost of the flow-inducey (if the study findings show that this is, indeed, part of the solution) would be about 3500. Addition0 work by the Park Dept . to enclose the device in fencing (above Ond \ below water) and do other miscellaneous work partainim4 to it should raise the installed cost from . 3600 to ,5000. The opertinr. cost is about Z100 a month fox electricity. The Town would incur costs for sand, grading, fencins, parking lot, ano bathhouse facilitles. A detailed feasibility study and plan for the project, plus the initial administration of herblelde, would cost :4000. It was atated that the cost of any further herbicide would be neglittible, and that its application could be easily handled by the Park l'opt. Preliminary indications are that the "res" could support 300 to 500 bathers simultaneously, year after year , all summer long, without a pollution problem, if the weeds are treated, a CIX culator installed, and precautions taken to ensure that there is no inflow of pollution from sources other than bathers. i ; - 2 - • It was also thow-kht that the possibilities for using the ddle by /;:'d. School 's parking, lot in conjunction wi th the "Old l'es" development should be investigated. Mr, Cortes also said that the pond and surrounding land are 9 "natural ecolog cal community ideal for a natural history park of interest for se con0ary if not elementary edueation". After the conclusion of the presentation, and several questions to clarify natters, r0 ll s r de the following motion, seconded by r0 ip1y, "Tho Co7,-)servati on Commission recommends jointly with tne ecraation omnittee that the electmen authorize the ex.penditure of 1000 for a czTo--ris•V"InigEri-PINI 1 survey of the "Old noservoir" to deter- Tithe t :t fibility as a swilm1n.,2, area and to increasi4 its usefulness as a multiple-us° recreation w ea for swimming, f i shin; and a natural science p..11 k " motion was approved unanimously.
