The federal Land and Water Conservation Fund Bill was signed on September
1, 1964. Moneys made available to conservation commissions throughout the Commonwealth
for the acquisition of land total $2,000,000 per year.
A useful article appeared in the August, 1964, Readers Digest, entitled"Con-
servation is Everybody's Battle'. It was suggested that reprints be given to each Town
Meeting Member. The cost per thousand, $18.00, was reduced very little by buying a
smaller number of reprints. Therefore, it was voted unanimously to buy 1000 copies.
The purchase of a rubber stamp reading Courtesy of the Lexington Conservation Com-
mission, was also approved. MR. ELLS will obtain the stamp and MR. SUSSMAN will
obtain the reprints.
The Lexington Land Use Map is being brought up to date by the League of
Women Voters. MR. SUSSMAN will write to Mrs. Reiman of the League concerning mutual
aid on this enterprise.
MR. RIPLEY will investigate the possibility of acquisition of a certain
piece of land.
The Town Forest Committee was the subject of brief discussion.
Regarding a certain privately entrusted bird sanctuary, Mr. Ells reported
that he had written to the attorneys for the trustees acquainting them with the Con-
servation Coomuission's work, and advising them that should they ever want to sell, the
Commission would be interested in obtaining and safeguarding the sanctuary for the town.,
In regard to another possible acouisition, Mr. Ells will draft a letter to
the attorney for the estate to acquaint him with the possibilities open to the heirs
in keeping the land in trust for the Town of Lexington under the Conservation Com-
mission.
The status of the Commissioners as special Town employees, and laws governing
such employees, were questioned.
MR.. SUSSMAN will be responsible for clarifying this.
The meeting adjourned at 10:00 p.m. Next, meeting will be held Thursday
evening, 12 November, at 8.30 p.m. , in the same place.
Respectfully submitted,
° M. C. Godwin
Secretary
