owev or, at a later date it would be pleased to discuss the ,
wount of money it expects the now building may cost.
Hr. Greeley presented a third set of plans which were
Studied and discuceed more or loos as follows:
Oreel4y; We have a set of plans that embodies, as far as
we could, the thoughts that came out last meeting
when the Chief was with you, it works out all right,
I think, for this stage.
This lethe basement or the present building and, as
you sug6estod, the Veterans, Cemetery Commissioners,
uelfare and Civil Defense aro in these room* under
us. You come in the back door which is the pollee
door now. It loaves plenty of room in the building
downstairs for storage and three automobiles, If
you think it wise, we are suggesting for three oars.
Chairmant This middle partition* is not at present there?
Greeleyo zoo, That is right. It means three separate stalls
here,
The next floor has no change.
Haskell Reed apoke of a Planning Board conference
room which we already had. I took it up with Mt.
Snow and he thought it was just the thing. We sold
it could be larger and I guess we decided it would
be larger, It will not rob the engineers so we will
make it larger, We will make it one room across the
front.
Now we come to the new building. Here we have . in
the first place, I suppose it is better to start on
the first floor and go up or down, -
41•21i,
fl
Greeley; We oome in the main entrance as before into a ve0tim,
bule, a corridor with the offie, counterand a oornev
out for the quiet place for signals, teletype. Than
going through to the olork's room and then the itteten.
tion room and oneeway glass. On the left* from the
main door, are the assistants' room 12i x 141 , and
the Chier's room with a door for escape. Across the
corridor is a fingerprinting room and the dark room,
vault, women's and men's toilets, assembly room for
100 with a storage off of it. liewever, we have
another door from outdoors with a stair case,
Hunter: We have three entrances now?
Greeley Right. An entrance towards the Barnes property, the
main entranee to the department in front and at the
rear, entrance for the second floor which is not in.
teneed to be an entranc4 for the polio department,
but they will have a key.
Going aeon stare, The aeoand floor people, if thy
go. down the stairs, go right put doors at that door
there. The police, if walking, can 091110 in this door
into their locker room and toilet, or leave their ors
in the garage and come in here to the same lookerroom,
or if they are on this side they can, come in this OA*
tranoe. It is all Shut away from the second floor.
Then you come into the locker room and there is space
fer sixty 16" lookers, two water closets, two Urinals,
three showers and one howl, From the looker room you
go up three steps to a landing, a little higher than
the basement floor and there is a gun rack. You pass
that and go down stairs and you arein the shooting
gallery which is 751, twenty-five yards to the back
well here.
Johnson: How much lower is the floor level of the shooting gallery?
Greeley: 202 and the looker room is 209. It is seven f4et down.
The floor and walls of the gallery will. 1) water proofed.
In the center of the room of th4 basement is the boiler
roam which Is down at 275, the storage in front and as
before we have women's cells and matron'a room on one
side and cella at the police entrance, janitor's room
and electric mem* three stalls e one stall is outside
the wan of the building.
If we go way to the top there is only ono way, we enter
here and that is the stairway nearest Gary Memorial. You
come in, and on the left is the health °Moo and then
there will be inspectors with counter and dosks. At one
end is a lot of fileS.
Hunter: Is that enough room for the false?
Greeley; More than enough.
,
, (
Greeley: Then there is a conference room, Adjoining is the
building department* There are some vaults there and -
a janitor's sink, Down the corridor you come to the
counter of the Asseseors. Their office room is
17 x 21' and their conference room which has a. door
to the corridor so it could be assigned to someone
else when the Assessors did not need it. Then
come down the (Corridor a little. further and you come
to the counter of the Public Welfare* .
Maloney: isn't that downstairs?
Greeley; We have it noted in both places. Which would you say
is the best of the two plaoes?
Maloney; I think it would be best for the old people to. oome into
the first floor*
Greeley: They need two rooms ox' one large room,
,
Maloney: If someone came In asking for aid wouldn't it be nice
for them to have a private room to discuss their per..
sonal business*
Greeley: The Veterans' A. and Cemetery are very happy in one
room now. One of the VeterAnneCometery rooms could be
used by Welfare or Civil Defense,
Johnson; If you dont need the garage that Is space to be used.
Maloney; Whose idea was that?
•
Greeley: It was mine, but don't lot it worry you.
Maloney: We have one garage now and it is not used, I think we
could use an office to better advantage*
Greeley: At the preent time no one uses this garage?
Maloney; No* It is not being used.
Greeley: If no ono uses it new it would seem fooliph to have
three, prom what you say we don't lued any more garag4is, ,
)'or the present, we will call this then Welfare,
Maloney: I think it could be assigned easy enough,
Chairman: The advantage to this is that they could eome in from th,
parking area*
Greeley: If Welfare needs a conferene,e room right aoress the lobby
here, where I have marked storage, could he used s a room*
I had better study their work again so to make sure,
Johnson: There is enough room there4 .
Greeleyt I will go tier to the Barnes again.
Going back to the top floor of the new building where we
had the Public Welfare it will please Haskell to put it,
another conference room and we will have room for growth* .
Maloney: Have two Or three unassigned,
Greeley: All right, let's call them unassigned,
Hunter: At Town Meeting, Harold 1,4,mont will ask why we have all
the extra rooms, .
Greeley: You can always say there is a need for conference rooms
and at some time you could put in a department*
Hunter: I think it would be well to mark it something*
Greeley: All right, conference rooms, , This seems to be better
than what we had before doesn't it? .
Hunters Very much,
•
-4-
Greeley: Ther4, is one thing we have not done and that is to show
the vents, When you come to the next stage or the plan
we have to leave room for tbt. vents to go up, through the
roof, Ono vont will take care of the eon and one of
the storage rooms, That make a difference of a few
inches. we ourselves don't know all about it until we
gat our heating engin4er to work on it, It won't change
the sloe of the room more than six inches.
Johnson: The Chief mentioned two and three carfgarage,
Maloney: Disease it with him again. Be has no further suggestions
on the present building,
Greeley: I will take it up again with him and if he says leave thin
for the future, the Committ“ will go along?
Maloney: Yes,
Greeley: Tho only thing outsized in the requirtments of a building
the size of this ono Is the Shooting galIery.
Chairman: Why ie it necessary to have a private toilet for a janitor?
Greel4yt It is almost universal
If you have a meeting in the near future you would probably
like us to take this to an estimating contractor, or
wouldntt you?
Maldneyt When we get to a point we would sed an estimate. I would
not want to spend too mach money on this bnilding. I think
it would get out of hand,
Greeley: We 11ves saved money tonight by not having those garages*
Maloney* The partitions don't need to be masonry do they?
Greeley: They could be John-Mantiville, There in about 4400 or 6500*
There is one opening in this room, if you want to make it,
which is another 4400* On the top floor is a partition for
the Planning Board and one here at $600. That is 04.00 for
this building,
Maloney: On the garagl on the other, side. Will there be a drain in
oast the police cars are washed?
„/ Greeley: Moro will tJ' , a drain eitherjust outside and drain the
floors out ob have it in the garage and have it slope
toward the drain,
Maloney: Most of the time they would be washing the cars and cleaning
them inside, especially in the winter.
Greeley: We can put the drain inside,
Maloney: Are we going to run into the problem of a gas trap?
Greeley: it is not a problem, but we will have a gas trap,
Johnson:. From a practical. standpoint, the patrolman coming in here
when he gets ready to report to the assembly room, he then
comes up the stair5?
Greeley: Right, Would you want a door there so that if they comp
up this stair they would not be seen?
johnsont I think the Chief moans that.
Greeley: Should we shut it off so SOM4 stranger at the counter could
not see him?
Chairman: I would suggest taking that up With the Chief, It would be
very easy to do.
Johnson: Then the fellows are not going to come. up hero, They
are going up there,
Greeley: You think it would be better policy to keep them inside
their own building. Xf they come in a oar they don't
even have to go outdoors,
Mr. Greeley c ;11 & the Oommitteole attention to a diocropancy
in the plan, submitted by the Engineering Department and Mr. Johnson
euggested, and the Committee agreed, returning it to the 4ngincers
requeating that the particular area where the building le going
be Checked,
The Chairmen asked If Mr, Greeley wanted to have the contours
checked and he replied in the affirmative.
Mr, Hunter said, that it may have boon copied from a previous
plan and Ar, Greeley maid that it is very important and he should
know what it is now, not what it was,
Greeley i If you would like some more sets I can have them sent oat,
Maloney: We will have the Chief look at them and at least get the
police station end of this worked out,
Greeley: I will talk to him tomorrowit he is around.
What would, you like to have done next?
Chairman : I think we Should spend some time taking it over, get the
police settled, and talk with some of the other departments,
Hunter: Who should we talk to, Burns or Gayer?
Maloney: Burns now and Gayer later.
Greeley: Shall we wait to hear from you?
Maloney: After you talk to the Chief you might let us know,
Hanterl Send us another print corrected to suit.
Greeley: Then we will wait until w hear from you.
Mr. Greeley retired at 9110 k',P,
Chairman: Who do you think we should have in next, BurnsT
Maloney: When the Chief and Mr. Greeley meet we can close the police
station, Do you think w ould discuss the plane with the
Selectmen?
Johnson: We haven't too much time,
Chairman: We will fellow thAolugh to be sure our police business is settled.
That should not take more than a week, The following week
should we have Burns in?
Johnson: Lot's Ittake it leas than two weeks,
Chairman: It ie agreeable to me, I can Shook :Friday and call you people,
It was agreed to hold a meeting on. Tuesday, November 22nd,
