Board of Selectmen
Town Office Building
Lexington, Massachusetts
Dear Chairman
The Town Celebrations Committee held its last meeting on
the evening of May 7. Mr. Gillespie was the only member absent
and Bill Abbott, a senior at Lexington High School, attended
long enough to play a recording which had been taken by Emerson
College on the reviewing stand the afternoon of April 19. Mr.
Charles Dudley, chairman of the Radio Department at Emerson,
gave the Town a copy of the recording for their records. I shall
give it to your secretary, Miss Murray.
Mr Lewis read some of the many letters which he has received
concerning the framed copies of the Liberty Bill. He went over the
items and bills concerning the expenses of the Committee.
The following motions were carried:
1. That Mr. Gillespie see that Liberty Bills shall be sent to those
young people who played in bands on April 19
2. That 1000 liberty Bills be put in the three historic houses to
be given away free to any one visiting the houses.
3 That the Board of Selectmen be written concerning the following:
a. That Mrs. Bernier serve as secretary for the distribution
of the Liberty Bills: The free copies on hand i- with the
approval of Mr. Lewis and Mrs. Cheever; the sale of additional
Bills, under the decision of the Board of Selectmen.
b. That each member of the Board and the secretary of the Board
be given numbered copies of the Liberty Billl.
c. That numbered copies of the Liberty Bill be kept in the
Town files and one buried in the corner stone of the new
building.
d. That an article be inserted in the Warrant for the special
Town Meeting in June (if there is to be one) asking for
an appropriation for the Color Guard (See 5. below)
e That the Board of Selectmen appoint members for the Celek _.
brations Committee as soon as possible so that plans can
be started for next year 's guest and UN Day this fall.
4. That letters be written to Mr. Bevis, the Bear in the parade;
to Miss Sfidie and her typing class at High Schhol for help in
f/
2
writing letters td all the governors; to the schools for s
suggestions with reasons for a guest of honor next year -
one who would typify "a good American".
5. That the following members work up an appropriation for the
Color Guard and meet with the Board to arrange for an article
in the Warrant; Rooney, Poehler, Dearborn, Gustin, and Lewis.
There was a long list of suggestions for next year to be
drawn up for the permanent Committee. I shall try to get this
in form for you by your next meeting.
Mr. Gustin showed us some fine pictures on screen in color
that he had of the celebrations on April 19 There were other
pictures to be seen from other sources so it was decided at the
close of the evening to have a dinner meeting. We are planning
to go to Sky-View at Bedford Airport on May 21 with our wives or
husbands and see all the pictures available. It has been a fine
Committee
Sincerely yours
