HomeMy WebLinkAbout1947-01-REC-rpt.pdf ( copy ) RECREATION COMMITTEE REPORT January, 1947 GENERAL SUMMARY Recreation in Lexington is encouraging but inadequate and needs to broaden its scope into a year round program of diversified activities with established responsibility to coordinate all parts, and authority to direct those parts for the best use of all people in the town. SPECIFIC NEEDS 1 Leadership Lexington needs a recreation director who can give full time and effort to the work Competent trained leadership is the "key" to success in public recreation as it is in everything else. This individual needs to know the philosophy and the principles of organized public recreation. He must be a good executive and able to instruct others, plan ahead, and interpret his plan, understand the needs of Lexington and know how to meet them, to provide a program that will include the pre-school age child, the youth, and the adult. 2. Areas A. To acquire an area of at least 6 acres to be developed into a Grade A playground in North Lexington for use of the Manor Section B. To acquire an area of at least 6 acres to be developed into a Grade A playground in the Woburn Street section C To develop the Reservoir area to provide at least 4 acres of playground space. D To develop the area adjacent to Franklin School as a Grade A playground. E. To develop the Center Playground and Aldrich estate as a general town recreation center. I F. To adopt a policy for the acquisition and development of suitable areas as needed with relation to natural growth of the town. 3. Facilities 1 Sanitary conveniences on the Center Playground. copy ) RECOMMENDED ACTION 1 To see if the Town will provide a Temporary Recrea- tion Commission under the Board of Selectmen composed of 5 members, 2 appointed by the Board of Selectmen, 2 appointed by the School Committee, and 1 appointed by the Towh Moderator to develop the scope of and establish authority for a recreation program and make recommendations for the 1 establishment of a permanent recreation commission to the Board of Selectmen before the next annual town meeting. 2. To see if the Town will provide 43500.00 for expenses incidental to the Temporary Recreation Commission, and give authority for free use of the Park Department's records and clerical assistance. 3. To see if the Town will authorize the Temporary Recreation Commission to define the authority, require- ments, duties and recommendation of a full time recrea- tion director.
