An irregular bulletin of the Lexington-Waspam Sister City Committee
May, 1990
SAWMILL IS DELIVERED TO WASPAM BY MATT FOTI AND JON FOBERT
On March 12th Matt Foti and Jon Fobert flew to Managua, Nicaragua,
picked up the Mobil Dimension sawmill which the Lexington-Waspam Sister
City Committee purchased for the town of Waspam, and drove three days
across the country in the back of a pick up truck to Waspam
They assembled the mill , trained several local residents in its use,
established a working sawmill committe, and wrote a contract which spelled
out the terms of our agreement with Waspam They spent ten days in Waspam,
working all day, and feasting on iguana meatballs and turtle meat at night !
Their trip was the culmination of two years of fundraising by the
Lexington-Waspam Sister City Committee with donations from many people in
Lexington and surrounding towns Matt , owner of Foti Tree Service, read
about the sawmill effort in the Minuteman and called to offer advice and
assistance He later volunteered to accompany the mill to Waspam, and one
of his employees, a former Lexington resident , Jon Fobert , offered to go as
well Without them, the sawmill effort could not have been successful
Matt and Jon also delivered books and alphabet cards made by children at
Bowman, Estabrook, Bridge and Fiske Schools and translated by Spanish
students at Lexington High School and by Veronica Welch an elementary
school Spanish teacher The books were received with great excitement
The schools have no books, and no materials Each class has up to
60 children per class and students carry their desks from home to school on
their head each day The children in Waspam sent back art work in thanks
for the gift of books The Waspam drawings are displayed in the Children s
Room at Cary Library
We 're all very excited about the success of this venture, and very grateful
to Matt and Jon We re planning on focusing on the schools for our next
project
To hear more about this incredible trip, come hear Matt and Jon and see
their slides on Sunday May 19th at 7PM at Church of the Sacred Heart 20
Follen Rd
