LEXINGTON-WASPAM SISTER CITY COMMITTEE
P.O. Box 283, Lexington,MA 02173 USA
8 December 1996
Letter for the Lexington Minuteman:
We are writing to tell you about the activities of the Lexington-Waspam Sister
City Committee (LWSCC) during the past year and to ask for your support for these
projects in the coming year.
LWSCC has undertaken to pay the salary of an elementary school teacher, Ms.
Lucrecia Pedro Patron, in the Sumu town of Awastingni, in the municipality of
Waspam. She had been working as a volunteer prior to 1994, and our committee has
agreed to support her while she studies for her teaching certificate, which would permit
her to take a position in the government education system and to receive a salary as a
fully accredited teacher. Lucrecia is nearing the end of her studies and is paid the
standard salary for a beginning teacher in Nicaragua: $975.
A second project involves the payment of school tuitions of the 20 Awastingni
secondary students attending school in Bilwi. Bilwi (formerly Puerto Cabezas) is the
principal urban center in the Northern Autonomous Atlantic Region (RAAN) of
Nicaragua. This costs $725.00.
Finally, Matt Foti will be traveling to Nicaragua at the beginning of January and
will be transporting baseball equipment for the children of Awastingni. We just need
baseball gloves and catcher's equipment. If you can donate these items, please call Matt
at 861-0505,Jackie Ward at 862-2750, or drop them off at the Wales Copy Center by
December 27th.
We need your help in raising the money for the Awastingni project. The
combined total is $1,700.00. Although the amount involved here is not great, it is not
insignificant, and it must be obtained if the project is to continue in 1997 For whatever
you can give, we thank you. Please send your tax-deductible contribution to: LWSCC,
P 0 Box 283, Lexington, MA 02173.
