HomeMy WebLinkAbout1974-06-27-JSBCC-min.pdf f A meeting of the Joint Services Bicentennial Coordinating Committee was held at the Hansom Air Force Base Officers ' Club on Wednesday, 27 June 1974 Colonel Sigurd L Jensen, Jr presided The meeting was called to order at 7 30 p m Attending , in addition to Colonel Jensen, were Lt Col Thomas N Kane, 804th Hospital Center John Damon, Concord Laurence A Murray, Concord Robert Parks , Concord Lincoln Cole, Lexington Robert Tarlin, Lexington Arthur Flynn, Congressional Aide David Moffitt , Minuteman National Park Frank Hidinger, Mass Port Authority Leo Talbot , Fort Devens Major Donald Rhoads , Hanscom Air Force Base John Coughlin, Hanscom Air Force Base Colonel Jensen noted that General Bellis had received a letter from the Secretary of the Air Force ' s Office of Infor- mation reconfirming the hold on the 590th Air Force Band from McGuire AFB, and the Strolling Strings for Concord and Lexing- ton on 19 April 1975 �• It C-- Leo Talbot said that Army reconfirmation had not been received but he would initiate a check through channels It was noted that confirmation had not been received from the Navy or Coast Guard David Moffitt commented on the 21 June 1974 meeting of the Minuteman National Park Advisory Commission He said that it was , in effect, an information-gathering session called to ascertain that the Park and the Towns were in concert as to Bicentennial expectations Colonel Kane reported that he had met with representatives of the two towns and that some confusion exists on medical coverage for 19 April 1975 As matters now stand, the National Guard will cover Concord and will call on the 804th if they need help When the Guard encampment ends , a meeting will be held to finalize medical coverage plans C Robert Parks reported that plans for feeding parade par- ticipants is progressing well Some minor problems in de- tails need to be addressed, and this will be done immediately Police escort for the busses must be coordinated A discus- sion on refrigerated trucks followed Leo Talbot will recheck availability of two refrigerated trucks at Fort Devens Robert Tarlin announced that Representative Lincoln Cole had been appointed Chairman of Lexington' s Bicentennial Committee Mr Tarlin noted that meetings were being held between various police elements to finalize police activities on 19 April 1975 Laurence Murray reported that Concord' s 19 April 1975 plans are fairly firm A ham network of 50 to 60 operators will be involved in the communications process The only loop not closed is the hand-operated units , but work continues in that area Colonel Jensen reminded Mr Murray that the Air Force had eight which were available and simple to operate Mr Murray noted that the Concord operations center would be at Civil Defense Headquarters in the Post Office basement Combining the Army system with the helicopters will give solid coverage A lost child section is being organized for use The 357th Army Civil Affairs unit will review Concord' s public health plans during its forthcoming summer encampment The unit ' s personnel are reputable civilian professionals , and many will act in an advisory capacity throughout the bicen- tennial program Mr Tarlin noted that the 443rd, from Rhode Island, was IJ" rec- available for help and could be used by both towns They will give Lexington three days during their encampment, then work at home on a plan The three days will be used for infor- mation gathering Mr Tarlin suggested that the public was not totally aware of the work being done within the Joint Armed Forces Bicen- tennial Coordinating Committee An informative press release might help Colonel Jensen asked Major Rhoads to prepare such a release Mr Tarlin said that Lexington was searching for a portable band stand for concerts It was suggested that he contact the Concord Barbershop singing group which owns a collapsable stage a ( (- John Damon reviewed the status of military confirmations for parade participants Follow up letters would be sent to the services not securely committed Commitments for the Academies were being processed now, so checks should he made immediately Congressman Cronin had provided Concord with the name of the Navy Information Director so that contact could be made in Washington There being no further business , Colonel Jensen announced that the next meeting would be held on Wednesday , July 31 He hoped that the sub-committees could wind up their business at that meeting dj • rnme 0 p m dir A/ 40 Ile � 'D L JE� N, iv to • el , USq'
