Molly Nye, Tina Forbes, Donald Gillespie, Marion Colette, Nancy Gordon, Judith Greenwald, Natalie Warshawer, Judi Ozuransky, Ann Parks; also Maria White, Management Intern Absent. Yvette Kaplan Three observers were present A reporter from the Minuteman, a reporter from the Independent, and a member of the League of Women Voters Molly Nye opened the Meeting at 7 35 p.m. p The minutes of the ,July 14 meeting were corrected as follows on page one, paragraph two, line four, the words, "The Office” should be replaced with the word "anyone"; on page two, paragraph six should have the following addition "She listed activities sponsored by the Cambridge Arts Council These included The Cambridge River Festival;, Arts on the Line; Arts in Education; Art in Public Places; Artists in Residency:; Grants to Local Arts Groups; Competitions and Commissions; Cultural Heri- tage "rogram; Technical Assistance Program; and, Community Arts Program." Molly Nye told the Council about the meeting of the Concord Arts Council on July 17 that she and Tina Forbes attended, mentioning that it was very informative Tina. reported. that Iottery tickets would be sold weekly but drawn on a monthly basis and will have a picture printed on them. Local Arts Council members were invited to visit ,tbe Lottery Office in Braintree Jackie O'Reilly of the State Arts Lottery Council gave a breakdown of where the Lottery money would go She said that the base amount of money each local Arts Council could receive from the Lottery is determined according- to the Cherry sheet formula She said that Arts Councils could apply to the Attorney General for non-profit status and could also set-up groups such as "The Friends of the Lexington Arts Council" Information on this would be sent from the State Arts Lottery Council Molly Nye told the Council that by acquiring non-profit status, the Council could obtain money from corporations and other businesses Maria White told the council about her conversation with Mary Miley, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen Maria informed Mrs Miley of the Council's plans and activities The Council agreed that a meeting between the Council and Mrs Miley would be useful Members discussed the activities of the Cambridge Arts Council and tQ other Arts Councils Natalie Warshawer told the Council about her conversation with Barry Marchette of the Sudbury Office of Cultural Affairs Molly Nye stated that the Council needs to acquire funds for organizational purposes and for such expenses as membership costs for joining associations and trips to conferences Tina Forbes added that the •Council could not receive funds from the Mass Council on the Arts and Humanities unless the Lexington group had some funds of its own Members discussed the likelihood of acquiring money from businesses Lor organizational purposes and agreed that it was neuessary to develop a purpose for tie ronev and to approach the Board of Selectmen with their. proposals /au pArts Council Minutes (Cont'd) - 2 - Marion Coletta told the Council that Carol Miller could attend the Council's next meeting. Questions should be developed and given to Carol so that she will be prepared with answers Members discussed the means of obtaining non-profit status and considered working with the town counsel on this Donald Gillespie asked about the possibility of using Adams School in the same way that Wayland has redeveloped a building for artists Tina Forbes said that Adams was going to be rented by a private school in the coming year; she added that the School Sites Conversion Committee was the appropriate committee to approach with questions about school redevelopment Tula Forbes told the Council that she spoke with the person in charge of public relations for Alt Week at the Artists Foundation This was in regards to the question the Council had about what the Council is being asked to do for Art Week She learned that the Foundation wants the Council to make a slide presentation to the Chamber of Commerce of what Lexington artists are doing for Art Week as a means of publicizing Art Week. In addition, the Foundation wants to know if someone from the Council would coordinate the Art Week publicity efforts in Lexington Molly Nye explained what Art Week is and what would take place as part of the Art Week program. r The Council decided to inform the Artists Foundation that the Council cannot take on this publicity function as it was not the Council's purpose to promote individual artists Ann Parks brought up the subject of the Council's statement of purpose She said that She will S h get the Statement of purpose from the Somerville Arts Council for the next [meeting. Judith Greenwald was asked by Molly Nye to contact the Haverhill and Winchester Arts Councils and get from them their respective statement's of pur- pose, a report of their activities, and details about how they obtain money Members listed the questions to be given to Carol Miller The following questions were listed 1 What is the Council on the Arts and Humanities (C.A H )? 2 Row does the C.A.H. get its funds? 3 How does the C.A.H. distribute funds to groups? 4 What is the best way for the Lexington Arts Council to utilize the C.A H. and other groups that the C.A.H. comes into contact with? 5 What are "Community Cultural Resources?" 6 Who are the consultants that work on the C.A H Workshops? 7 What "category" does the Lex. Arts Council fit into in regards to membership in organizations/ Marion Coletta told the Council that members could contact her if they had additional questions Judi Ozuransky told the Council that she will be meeting with a person from the Recreation Department to discuss ways that the Rec Dept and the Council could work together for the arts Mara White reported that two additional responses to the Arts directory have been received since the last meeting Arts Council Minutes (Cont'd) - 3 - Tina Forbes told the Council that she called the Art Bank - a registry of artists from all over the country - and learned that it is being used for the MBTA's "Arts on the Line" The Art Bank is now at the Cambridge Arts Council Members talked about developing a slide registry of Lex artists which could serve as an Art Bank and possibly be kept at Cary Library Melly Nye suggested that an article be prepared for the newspapers in September that would clarify the purpose of the directory Molly Nye showed the Council tourist information from the towns of Stockbridge and Wellfieett Members discussed the possibility of drawing up similar materials for visitors to Lexington and questioned whether this activity was part of the Council's function or a function of the Chamber of Commerce Molly Nye mentioned the idea that she and Tina had about compiling profiles of the members pf the Council She suggested that members bring to the next meeting a short paragraph describing themselves and their activities Judi Ozuransky asked if the Council was going to pursue the idea of sponsoring an -arts festival Molly Nye asked that Judi look into the ways that other arts festi.Vals are run, stating that data and ideas could be collected now for future use Ann Parks mentioned that a list of projects proposed by the Council and by persons included in the directory should be developed These projects could be considered as Council project priorities Judi Ozuransky told the Council that the Marblehead Arts Council did a mass mailing to residents asking the residents what they wanted from the Arts Council Members discussed the possibility of doing a similar mass mailing in Lexington, and asked Maria White to check and see if this would be possible Members agreed to hold their next meeting on Monday, September 8 at 7 30 p m.
