for this nitial meeting of the Council Nancy welcomed the Council members and
asked Meij_rs to introduce themselves and describe their particular-fnthe Arts and
.n the CJu cil She stated the purpose for the Council and described the way that -_
the _o`ni functions- within the Town government Nancy asked that someone volunteer
to be Charman of the Council as is required of all Town Committees There were no
volunteers at this time 1
Coup-cil members raised questions about the role and purpose of the Council
_:ar_cy ans: _red these questions from material sent to the Town by the State Arts
Lottery Council She added that while the material does not clearly define how
local Arts 3ouncils are to function, workshops currently being conducted by the
+a ssachuse-ts Council on the Arts and Humanities will provide local councils with
_nformatin:r as to how Councils can operate effectively as well as describe the imple-
mentation of the Arts Lottery Bill Discussion followed as to who would be able to
attend the Boston area Workshop on Wednesday June 4 at 7 00 p.m at the Boston
Public Library It was decided that anyone able to attend this workshop or one in
Framingham on Thursday, June 12 at 7 00 r m would do so and report on the workshop
at the nexr meeting
The question of a Chairman of the Council was raised again by Nancy Banks
After a fe"a moments of discussion, Molly Nye and Tina Forbes volunteered to be Co-
Chairmen, erhich was acceptable to the Council
Members then discussed the role of the Council in relation to arts and artists
in Lexington The members felt that it was important for the Council to combine a
"clearinghouse" function for the ideas and requests of the various artists and art
croups with a function as a central body which would reflect and represent all the
different artists and art groups in town As a first step in this direction, the
m=nbers decided to compile a directory of all the artists and art groups in town
Yvette Kaplan agreed to write a short article or a "Letter to the Editor" for the
Minuteman This article or letter would publicize the Council's efforts to compile
the directory and would urge all artists and art groups to notify the Council of ,
_- _i exis*ence
The Co-Chairmen brought up the subject of how often the Council should meet
Members agreed that it was important to meet at least once a month Monday, June 16
{ at 7 30 p.m was set as the next meeting date at which time replies received per- Y
taining to the directory would be discussed, and reports on the workshops would be
heard
The meeting adjourned at approximately 9 10 p.m
