META Dept. of Transportation had decided not to allot Xfunds EMPLOYMENT to the MBTA in order to maintain the Employment Express EXPRESS to Route 128 industries, because too few people were benefited Members were asked to write both as a group and as in- dividuals to Mr Volpe urging reconsideration of this move, point- ing out the need to develop employment opportunities in industry Letters should also be directed to Thomas Floyd, Division of Research Project Management, Dept. of Transp , Washington 20591 ; and our legislators, Rep Edward W Brooke and Sen. Edward Kennedy. The following resolution was unanimously ADOPTED* The Lexington Commission on Suburban R' sponsibility supports the "Employment Express" of the MBTA and urges the Department of Transportation of the United States to reconsider its decision not to allot funds for its support; and the Commission respectfully urges the Lexington Board of Selectmen to represent the Town before the U. S. Department of Transportation in support of the "Employment Express • Speaking for the Jobs Task Foroe, Mr Weinstein present- AFFIRMATITE ed draft wording of two articles to be included in the ACTION warrant for the June town meeting, and a tentative plan PROGRAM of action. Both would require a majority vote 1/ A motion like that proposed in amendment of Article 13 in the March town warrant, authorizing the architect to negotiate for an affirmative aotion program and appropriate money, in connection with the junior high school construction program This would come under the scrutiny of, the state Comptroller' s office 2/ A motion to amend the town by-laws, authorizing all town boards, offices, committees and the town manager to provide for [ minority group employment and to expend town funds therefor This would have to be approved by the Attorney General and would thus provide a valid basis for a legal test. kc It was suggested that these two articles be requested of the Board of Selectmen. If the Board declines to include them in the warrant, a citizen' s petition will be sought It was unanimously VOTED* To request the Board of Selectmen to include an article in the June warrant covering the content of proposal # 1 above , the to request similar action on the content of proposal # 2 above These matters will be presented to the Board of Selectmen at the joint meeting of the two bodies on 28 April 1969 1 The next meeting of the Commission will be held on NEXT Thursday. 8 May 1969. at Muzzey Junior High School MEETING F
