Housing Task Force Function To research available housing programs and report fully to the Commission. Members Mrs Christensen (Convenor), Mr. Earsy, Mr. Scanlon, Mrs Riff in, Mr. Lindman, Mr. Graham. Specific Work Activities 1 . Investigate the need for moderate-income housing by local residents. 2. Investigate possible sites for moderate-income housing that may become available. 3. Investigate the possible use of tax title lands for low- and moderate-income housing 4. Seek advice and assistance from the new Mass. Department of Community Affairs on state assistance in the areas of housing, employment and education. 5. Investigate the need for a fair housing center in Lexington. 6 Establish liaison with realtors and financial instisutions involved in housing and seek their support. 7. Contact major employers in the Lexington-Route 128 area to determine whether their black employees need assistance in finding adequate housing. . 8. Review town codes to determine if they will unduly restrict low cost housing construction. Employment and Training Task Force Function: : To' investigate the problems and potential programs to improve the employment of black people in the Route 128 area. Members Mr Bernier (Convenor) , Mr Conroy, Mr. McLeod, Mr. Smith. Specific Work Activities 1 Investigate progress and problems of developing on-the-job training programs for blacks by construction industries in the Lexington area. 2. Investigate means of providing .progress toward improved hiring practices by contractors and unions. 2. 3. Investigate the need for the establishment of a job referral system geared toward finding jobs for black people living in or planning to move to Lexington. Task Force on Community Education Function. To examine existing programs for improvement to educational opportunities for both black and white people and make proposals for additional programs, if needed. Members: Mrs. Skov (Convenor) , Mrs Clarke, Mt. Donovan, Miss Lundberg, Mr. Smith, Mr. Kellogg. Specific Work Activities 1 Study and make recommendations about the public school curriculum 2. Determine whether programs of adult education can be used to educate whites on black history, ghetto problems, and the need for change in certain attitudes by whites. 3 Assist the Metco program in any way possible. 4. Investigate means for supplementing the efforts of the Merco program. 5. .Prepare a program approach to solving any problems which may arise in education due to increases in multiple housing in Lexington, especially if occupied in part by low-and moderate- income families. In addition to the above activities in the areas of housing, em- ployment and education the Commission will seek to undertake the following activities wring the coming year- 1 . Join with other similar organizations in the metropolitan Boston area to seek area-wide solutions to the problems of housing, employment and education. 2. Invite prominent experts on housing and urban affairs to Lexington to speak before open meetings. 3 Propose specific actions on housing, employment and education to the Board of Selectmen and other town boards , where appropriate. / i
