CONSt;RVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES Of Commission meeting December 29, 1969.
The meeting was called to order 8:10 p.m. , by the Chairman Mr.
Brown, with Mrs. Frick and Messrs. Mazerall, Sussman and 'Tot-
man present
The minutes of the December 20 meeting were checked and approved.
Swenson Farm. Mr. Mazerall reported work progressing well on
the proposed picnic area. Completion depends upon funding.
Bill for Great Meadow Study has been received from Camp Dres-
ser and McKee. Mr Sussman stated that the only fund it could
come from was the Conservation Fund, since the land belongs to
Arlington (Article 70, 1968 Town Warrant) . Mr. Brown will check
with Mr. Perry about this, since records from the Comptroller
do not show this.
"The Horse People" Mr. Brown received a letter from Mr. Robert
Bona, expressing interest in land on Robinson Hill and/sr con-
servation land for horseback riding and horse shows Mr. Suss-
man felt that it would be valuable to keep avenues of communi-
cation open between the Commission and the 4-H Club, since 4-H
may soon become interested in conservation.
H U D Form, new to the Commission was passed around and explained
by Mr. Sussman.
Citizens for Lexington Conservation. Mr. Friedman said that the
au is planning to put out a newsletter within the next two
weeks. The emphasis will be on the effects of poisons on the
environment. The Commission recommended general information
on conservation easements (Ch. 666, Acts of 1969) . Mr. Sussman
gave him the following statement, with concurrence of the ether
Commission members:
"The Conservation Commission, working with the Plan-
ning Board intends to place before Town Meeting the
opportunity to safeguard a significant part of the
Town wetlands and waterways. To the extent possible,
it will make use of conservation easements whereby the
owner continues to make use of his property but conveys
to the Town certain of his rights in the land - such
as to build upon it or to alter it in some ways. In
some cases, as circumstances warrant, the Commission
will request ownership. The expenses of townspeople
and Town Government related to stream and water control
(sometimes in basements) are well known and emphasized
by experience in recent storms."

OAS 60. Mr. Brown noted that the Town has only 90 days from
contract date to acquire the properties it covers. A letter
to the Selectmen, with a copy to Mr. Legro, will emphasize
this fact. The contract includes Hayden Avenue area, Modoono,
Steeves, Advent Christian Church, Chandler and Kingston Homes
properties.
Conservation Commissions in Massachusetts. by Andrew S.W.
Scheffey, a study giving the history of conservation in this
and other New England states, was recommended for purchase
for each member of the Commission as well as for other concerned
Town officials. MOVED and PASSED that the Commission should
purchase 12 copies @ $3.00 each.
The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m. until January 5, at 7 45 p.m.
