HomeMy WebLinkAbout1940-07-01-DEFENSE-rpt.pdf LEXINGTON CIVILIAN DEFENSE COMMITTEE MEETING JULY 1, 1940 A meeting of the Lexington Civilian Defense Committee was held in Estabrook Hall at eight o'clock. The Board of Selectmen, Lt. Col. Wilford A. Avalker, and about one hundred and twenty-five persons were present. The Clerk was also present. jar. Giroux, Chairman of the Executive Com. , presided. The Chairman said that as far as he knew, every or- ganization in town was represented here. He said that the Committee must operate at once, and he hoped that the Chair- men of each Committee would call a meeting of his committee immediately, Mr. Giroux explained the duties of each committee. lie stated that the Adjutant General had placed in charge of this work Lt. Col. Milford A. Walker. He presented Lt. Col. Walker. Lt. Col. Walker said that the Chairman of the group had been appointed by the Governor of the Commonwealth, and was connected with the U. S. Government in a common cause. He said that the National Defense Act was passed in 1920, allow- ing action to be taken in case of emergency much sooner and better than before. The Selective Service Law has been written up and is ready. Previous to this, it took five. months for men to be ready to go to war, but under the present plan, this can be done within two months. Lt. Col. Walker urged that each sub-committee arrange for a meeting, as soon as practicable, so that plans could be formulated and action to be taken in time of emergency decided upon. The Chairman asked what other citi .s and towns were rep- resented, and Weston, Wakefield, Arlington, and Lincoln were. After a general discussion, the meeting adjourned at 935P. M.
