Massachusetts
Office of Selectmen
June 29th, 1940
Mr. Joseph R. Cotton
123 Marrett Road
Lexington, Mass
Dear Mr Cotton:
His Excellency, the Governor, upon recommendation of the
Selectmen of Lexington, has appointed me to organize and direct
a civilian committee in Lexington for the purpose of cooperating
with all local, state and national agencies having to do with- the
defense of the United States. This committee is authorized by his
Excellency, the Governor, as the official committee representing
Lexington in the status plan of national defense.
From this committee, when organized, will be set up smaller
committees to plan and help in the matter of enlistments , the
control of subversive activities, the establishing of a Home Guard
(when and if authorized) , the establishing of an auxiliary police
force pending the setting up of a Home Guard, the planning for
transportation, supplies and such finances as may be needed, and
all other matters which may arise in a national emergency and which
cannot be foreseen at the present moment.
It is intended that this work shall be so planned that citizens
will have a correct understanding of defense activities and a full
sense of security insofar as preparations can be made, but with
every effort directed toward the prevention of alarm, hysteria, or
panic ,
As Chairman of this committee, I have appointed the other
members of the Board of Selectmen of Lexington to serve with me,
They will be the executive board of this committee for the present,
At a later date the executive board will be enlarged.
This letter represents a formal request to you to become a
member of this committee . A prompt reply by telephone to Miss
Eleanor M. Lowe, Clerk of the Selectmen, at Lex. 0500, or by letter,
will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely yours ,
ARG EML Chairman, Selectm:na
