HomeMy WebLinkAbout1941-09-02-LCPS-min.pdf COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY Meeting - Sept 2, 1941 A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Lexington Committee on Public Safety was held in the Highway Office , Town Office Building, Tuesday evening, September 2, 1941 at 8 00 P M Chairman Luther R Putney, Messrs Alan G Adams , Lee E Tarbox, Robert Whitney, Allen Rucker , Richard Cromwell, Manfred Warren, Robert Mayo, Walter Sands, Melville Webb and Malcolm Clifford were present Mr Putney reported that he had received a letter from Mr. George C Sheldon tendering his resignation as a member of the Executive Committee due to the fact that in the Fall his duties in connection with the Appropriation Committee are so increased that he felt he could not continue to give his time to this Committee. Mr Walter Sands moved that Mr. Sheldon' s resignation be accepted with regret Mr Robert Whitney seconded the motion, and it was so voted. Mr. Putney suggested that inasmuch as this resignation left the committee with the number of members in unison with the other committees , that no appointment for replacement be made Mr Sands voiced his approval and it was the feeling of the Committee that no appointment should be made. Mr Putney said that a woman had called him and informed him that the town of Arlington paid the 55.00 entrance fee to the Defence School. Mr Sands suggested that our local Defense School would be ample and that the Town should not be asked to pay for any admittance fees to the Boston Defense School Mr Sands reported that he had ordered 125 arm bands and 100 police billies for the Auxiliary Police Mr Sands reported that he had received a letter from Chief Edward W Taylor resigning as Chairman of the Auxiliary Firemen. Mr. Webb moved that the resignation be accepted Mr. Rucker seconded the motion, and it was so voted. Mr. Sands moved that Norman Hooper be appointed Chairman of the Auxiliary Firemen. Mr Whitney seconded the motion, and it was so voted. 2 Mr Giroux, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, informed the Committee that the Board was making up the warrant for the Town Meeting to be held September 22, 1941. He asked the Committee if they would like to insert the words "or borrow" in the Article for the Warrant asking for money for the Committee on Public Safety. The Selectmen suggest that this Committee ask for all the money they expect to need up to April 1, 1941. The Selectmen also asked the Committee to handle the matter on the floor at the Town Meeting and to prepare the vote . Mr Walter Sands moved that the words "or borrow" be inserted in the Article requesting $1,000 00 for the Lexington Committee on Public Safety Mr Whitney seconded the motion, and it was so voted. It was decided to have Mr Rucker prepare the Article and Mr. Robert Whitney present it . Mr Clifford asked the Committee for permission to remove some of the Special Police officers who refuse to attend meetings and show a lack of interest in the organization Mr Sands moved that a letter from this Committee be written to Mr Clifford authorizing him to recommend to the Board of Selectmen that warrants issued to certain Special Police Officers be revoked because of the above mentioned reasons. Mr Whitney seconded the motion, and it was so voted. The meeting adjourned at 10 25 P M. sola Secx�tar1
