Update on Subcommittee on Voter Participation in Lexington
The subcommittee is continuing to work on its report. One barrier to citizens running for office is
the expense. Shannon Murtagh mentioned a program in Seattle that awards money to candidates
for office based on a small amount of money attached to voter turnout in previous elections.
Larry Freeman mentioned that another barrier is the number of candidate forums.
Future study on housing
John Guidice reported that the challenge is while there is good understanding of the problems
associated with lack of housing, there is not a clear understanding of how the various agencies
operate. The problem is clarifying how the housing agencies work and making the information
available is a clear way on the town website.
A decision was made to continue to discuss this at the next meeting. No vote was taken at this
meeting. .
