June 19, 1940:
.A special meeting of the Board of Selectmen Was held
in the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building, at 7:30 P.M.
Chairman Giroux, Messrs. Potter, Rowse, Locke and Sarano
were present.
Letter was received from Mr. Paxton advising that bids
on sand and gravel were received on June 18th from three
concerns and that R.H. Stevens was the low bidder. On the
same date, prices on broken stone were received from three
concerns and the Mass. Broken Stone Co. was the low bidder.
Mr. Sarano moved that the bids of R.H. Stevens and the
Mass. Broken Stone Co. be accepted. Mr. Locke seconded
the motion and it was so voted.
Bids
Letter was received from the Town Engineer stating
that the Ford Station Wagon owned by the Engineering Dept.
had been driven over 45,000 miles since April, 1934. It Engineering
is badly in need of overhauling and it will be necessary ear
to purdhase two new tires at the end of this month. Mr.
' Cosgrove said that the body of the car was so badly eaten
by dry rot that he did not believe it would be economy to
attempt to repair it. In checking its performance during
April and May, he found that the car consumed a gallon
of gasoline every 8Q miles and a quart of oil every 47
miles. Mr. Cosgrove said he hoped that the Town Meeting
scheduled for July 1st would authorize the department to
purchase a new beach wagon for $750.00.
Mr. Potter moved that an article be inserted in the Article
warrant to see if the Town will vote to transfer the sum of
$750. from the Excess and Deficiency Acodunt to the Engineer-
ing Dept. expenses account. Mr. Locke seconded the motion
and it was so voted.
Letter was received from Mr. Garrity stating that on
May 14th the Board authorized him to purchase paint for the Paint for
swimming pool from the Inertol Co. Mr. Garrity said he swimming
had found it nedessary to purchase the paint from the pool
Afco Products Co. of Lexington. Mr. Potter moved that
Mr. Garrity's action be approved. Mr. Locke seconded the
motion and it was so voted.
Upon motion of Mr. Locke, seconded by Mr. Potter, it Jury list
was voted to adopt the following jury list for 1940 and 1941.

The Chairman said that Rev. Paul H. Chapman had tel -
Permit ephoned him and asked for permission to conduct a patriotic
service at Lexington Common on July 3rd, at 7:30 P.M. Mr.
Rowse moved that the permit be granted. Mr. Locke seconded
the motion and it was so voted.

The Chairman said that Mrs. William Shurtcliff of
Somerset Road had requested the.use of -;the Barnes property Permit
garage on June 28th for a sale to be held by the Congrega-
tional Church, Mr. Potter moved that the permit be granted.
Mr. Locke seconded the motion and it was so voted.
Upon motion of Mr. Potter, seconded by Mr. Locke,
the following vote was passed: VOTED; That Mr. William
C. Paxton shall act as Supt. of Pubic Works until January
1, 1941 at his present salary, this to take effect
immediately.
The meeting adjourned at 10:30 P.M.
