SELECTMEN'S MEETING
MARCH 1, 1940.
A special meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held in
the Supt. of Public works office, Town Office Building, at
4215 P.M. Chairman Giroux, Messrs. Potter and Sarano, Supt.
of Highways Mr. Patton, and Supt. of Schools Mr. Grindle were
present. The Clerk was also present.
The Chairman said that the purpose of the meeting was to
review the situation relative to the non-plowing of snow from
sidewalks. He said that the people in East Lexington were
thoroughly dissatisfied because the sidewalks were not plowed
and feared for the safety of their children. Their ohief
complaint is that the Mass. Ave. sidewalks are not opened up.
The criticisl is that the sidewalks were not opened up at the
beginning of the snow storm. The Chairman said that most
people realize thattthe Highway Department had enough to do
to plow out the streets then.
Mr. Paxton said it would cost about the same now as it
would at the beginning of the storm. It would be necessary
to start at one end of Town and then we would get complaints
from people at the other end and also complaints from those Snow
living on the side streets. He figured that it would cost removal-
$4,000. to $5,000. as it would have to be entirely hand work. side-
Mr. Potter said he thought the tractor could do it. Mr. walks.
Sarano asked if it would do any good to take the roller and
pack down the snow and Paxton thought it might possibly work
out that way, but it would be bad when it melted as people
would start sinking through it.
The Chairman said that the Fire Dept. men would atop
doing traffic duty today. The people in East Lexington wanted
to know if they could have free bus service for their children.
Mr. Grindle said that they could furnish temporary bus
transportation from Brick Village, but if it was done there,
it would have to be done all over Town. The School Dept.
has given permission to anyone who wants toi to bring his
lunch and stay at school during the noon hour.
Mr. Paxton said that it was going to be necessary to
plow a sidewalk soon because the snow will be getting slushy
enough and the work can be done for very much less than it
could be done now. He suggested that the Highway Dept. men
be given red flags and tha t they be stationed at different
points to guard the children along the roadways.
Mr. Grindle said that the elementary schools would be
closed any bad day.
Mr. Sarano asked what it would cost to have a bus
running from East Lexington, and Mr. Grindle said that
probably would depend upon the number of tickets used.
Mr. Paxton said that only nine complaints had been
received, two from off Bedford Street and seven regarding
Mass. Avenue.
Mr. Potter said he did not think it was a good idea to
give free bus service as the children have the privilege of
using a bus now, with tickets. He thought that probably much

of the snow would melt over the week-end anyway.
Mr. GrinF3le said he thought it would be well to have
the Highway Dept. men out with the red flags. Mr. Paxton said
that they would have twice as many men as the Police and Fire
Departments and the Town would get four or five more hours
work for the same money.
The Chairman suggested that the Fire Department men
continue traffic duty through Monday and that Mr. Paxton come
in then and give his ideas on the subject.
Mr. Grind'. said that at the School Committee meeting the
other evening, they discussed having one session and there were
as many arguments against it as for it. The children would be
out op the streets in the afternoon then.
The Chairmansuggested that the School Committee come in
Monday night to discuss the subject also.
Mr. Grindle said that the School COMmittee had requested
him to express its appreciation to the Board of Selectmen for
all if had done in getting the Fire and Police Department ment
out to do traffic duty.
The Chairman told the Board that he had signed the W.P.A.
W.P.A. project for the Northt Lexington Sewers and he asked approval
sewer of his action. Mr. Sarano moved that the Chairman's action be
project. approved. Mr. Potter seconded the motion and it was so voted.
The meeting adjourned at 4:40 P. M.
