MINUTES of Commission meeting February7, 1972.
The meeting was called to order by the Chairman of the Commission;
Dr. Kassler, at 8:05 p.m. Present were the Appropriations Committee,
the Capital Expenditures Committee and the following members of the
Commission. Messrs. Brown and Cohen and Mesdames Frick, Pease and
Rawls and Mr. Mazerall (ex-officio) and the following Associate
Members of the Commission: Dr. Friedman, and Mesdames Nichols and
Solomon. Visitors Paula Alden of the League of Women Voters and
Roland Gubisch, having been informed of forthcoming executive ses-
ssion, left before the meeting was called to order.
Executive session was declared, and the meeting remained in execu-
tive session until 10 00 p.m. Other executive sessions occurred
between 10 15 and 10 30 p.m. and from 11 25 to 11 30 p.m. , when
adjournment took place.
Minutes of January 24, 1972 Meeting were approved with the following
amendments Page 1, paragraph 1 Names of Dr. Friedman and Mr.
Smith should be added to list of Associate Members present, Page 1,
paragraph 4 (which begins, "The land, described by the developer. . . " )
sentence beginning on line 5 should read, "Mrs. Nichols said that the
water table level could come within 2 feet of the surface during a
wet weather cycle, though the 5-foot level could be a correct read-
ing in this year, which is a normal year." Next sentence begins,
"Citing information in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Scil Sur-
vey Study, Mrs. Nichols said that this was a "high runoff area" " .
Page 1, paragraph 5, line 1 should read, "Conservation Commission
members expressed concern. . 'fl etc. ) Page 2, last paragraph, line 6
should read, "with the Commission on this. The Planning Board has" . "
(etc. ) Page 4, the following should be noted between paragraphs
3 and 4 * Addendum to Minutes of Commission meeting of January 3.
1972 New Conservation Chairman, Dr. Howard Kassler, was elected
unanimously, along with new Vice Chairman, Mrs. Angela E. Frick,
following announcement and acceptance of resignation of Stanley A.
Brown as Chairman of the Commission.
Minutes of January 31. 1972 Meeting were accepted with the following
amendments Page 1, paragraph 1 word "was should be inserted after
the word "there" . Paragraph 2, page 1, last sentence should read.
"Commission expressed cautious preliminary approval of the Vetters'
proposal in general, but felt that a less hurried detailed look at
all the facts would be necessary. " Page 1, paragraph 4, line 5:
Word "not" should be inserted after the word "should" . Page 2,
lines 2 and 3, the following sentence should be inserted, "Mrs.
Pease asked what kind of chemicals would be used and how they would
be disposed of: Page 2, lines 5 and 6 should read, "packaging
materials using small quantities of chemicals and there would be no
noxious waste from processes, according to Boughton. " Page 2,
paragraph 3 should read as follows, following the heading: "During
the question period a Lexington resident attacked the Commission
for not wishing to accept land last year for conservation but in-
stead advocating high density housing on it. The following was
read by Dr. Kassler in answer to the remarks and the Commission
Voted to put the statement in the minutes."

Display of Maps on the walls showing the 1972: Conservation
Commission program was much praised by members of the Commission.
These load been prepared by Mrs. Nichols during the past week, and
the Chairman said they had aided immeasurably to the discussion
earlier in the evening.
Environmental Concern Committee Dr Kassler handed the Co-Chair-
men several letters giving names of prospective Committee members.
Inquiry from Pembroke Conservation Commission aboutt a study of
land-use impact on the tax rate will be answered by Mrs. Greene,
saying that the study referred to was probably a land-use study
by the League of Women Voters done in 1965, which is both out-of-
date and unavailable.
Concern about Possible Emissions from W,R.Grace Co. was expressed
by members of the Commission, and the matter was referred to the
Environmental Concern Committee for possible action in cooperation
with the Board of Health. The growing of pollution sensitive plants
nearby was a suggested monitoring procedure,
Preparation for Town Meetin& and March 1 Information Meeting. Dr.
Kassler and Mrs. Nichols will meet with Mr. McSweeney on the prepara-
tion of visual aids.
Garden Club Meeting-Morning Study Group, Mrs. Rawls will talk on
1972 conservation articles, except for $ values.
Effect of META Extensions on the Environment will be the subject
of a meeting Saturday morning in Boston. Mr, Brown will attend,
The meeting adjourned at 11 30 p.m. , until Monday, February 149
scheduled for 7:45 p.m. At this time the Chairman, Mrs, Rawls and
Mr. Cohen will meet with the .Appropriations Committee, and the
Commission meeting will begin at approximately 8 00 p.m. , with
Mrs. Frick acting as Chairman (if a quorum exists) .
