quested them to sign his Application for a Peddler's
license. Mr. Merrick is a veteran, recently released from Peddler's
the hospital, and naw living at 821 Mass.Ave., Lexington. application.
The Board signed this application.
At 8:05 P.M. hearing was declared. open on the applic-
ation of of Frederick N. and Elsa F. .Anderson for permission
to maintain a one car wooden garage on the premises at
Burlington Street, Lexington. The Chairman read the notice
of the hearing.
Mr. Anderson stated that this was a private garage
for his own use.
Mr. and Mrs. William Clark appeared to obiect to the
permit being granted. Mrs. Clark stated that the garage Anderson
would be located ri;Tht opposite her dininf room and sun garage
porch windows and should be moved back. �lr. Clark stated hearing.
that as this was a deep lot there would be plenty of
room to move the garage back.
' Mr. Anderson stated that this wus a Cape Cod house
and that the garage *iouldbe attached to the house, They
had set it back as far:.as possible and had no passageway
between the garage and the house, which was an inconvenience
to them, so that the garage should be as far away from
their neighbor's Yhouse as was possible.

SELECTMEN'S MEETING
AUGUST 18, 1931.
' A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held
in the Selectmen's, Room, Town Office Building, at 7:30
P.M._Messrs, Trask, Shannon, Custance, Blake and Gilereast
were present. The Supt. of Public Works and the Clerk pro

tem were also present.
Dr. Shannon reported that Jean Tuttle complained that

Mr. Trask called attention to the fact that a sign
should be placed on the O'Connell dump as people were
still dumping there. Mr. Custance stated that a fence
was to be built around the property, also. The Supt.

of Public Works was requested. to take care of the matter.
Attention was called to the fact that out-of-town'
trucks were dumping in the Town dump, and something should
be done to remedy this situation.
The Board approved the Committee on the George
Washington Bicentennial Celebration appointed by the
Chairman i+f the Board and the Chairman of the Committee,
Ezra F. Breed, which is as follows:

Mr. Daniel Gorman, Jr, atated that the garage was con
about 11 feet high at the front and 6 feet high at they
rear.
The hearing was declared closed, and after dis-
cussing the matter, 141r. _Custance moved that the pewmit
be granted, and the Board so voted. '
Mr. Custance made a motion to notify the Building
Inspector that applications for all build-in:7s shall have
Building plot plans to be filed with the plan of the building.
plans. He also suggested that the Building Inspector be informed
that the plans should be in the Selectmen's Hpom the
night of the hearing. The Board voted to do this.
The Town Engineer came before the Board and presented
construction figures for Oakland Street from Glen Road
to Meriam Street.
The abuttors on one side of the street have already

time. Mr. Robert Whitney, one of the petitioners, owns
only forty feet on the street.
The Chairman stated that he would go over the matter
with Mr. Whitney, one of the petitioners.
The Town Engineer also presented a profile of
Sherman Street extension and stated that he could lower
the street about three feet at Oakland Street which
Sherman would be all that could be accomplished on account of '

The Town Engineer stated that he had talked to Mr.
Raymond and he felt that only four or five more days of

Culverts. The Town Engineer was requested to measure the inside
demensions of culverts along Vine Brook for Mr. Wrighting-
ton.
Letter was received from Mr. S.R. Wrightington in
which he gave his opinion in regard to insuring the fire -
chief and other.call firemen against liability for personal
Insurance. injury when going to fires in their own automobiles. He
stated that the Town could not do this and it was decided
to notify Mr. Taylor, Chief of the Fire Department, of
the Town Counsel's opinion in this matter.
Letter was received from Mr. Wrightington in regard
to the right of way in which the Town has an interest
on Lincoln Street.
Mr. Custance felt that this right of way was of no ,
further use to the Town and stated that Mr. Hennessey
expressed some interest in purchasing the property some
time ago. It was felt that Mr. Hennessey should be
given an opportunity to purchase the Town's interest

in this right of way if the Town so voted. Right of

Letter was also received from the Town Counsel
informing the Selectmen that he is in receipt of three
writs, the plaintiff irr the first writ being Charles
W. Ryder of Newtonville; the second, Charles W. Ryder and
Robert L. Ryder, Trustees of Lexington Estates Trust;
and the third, Robert L. Ryder, Trustee of the Lexington Ryder
Real Estate Frust:. He stated that he would take care of writs.

Letter was received from the County Commissioners
regarding suit entered by E. Elizabeth Holton of Lexington
and Louise M. Brogna of Boston for assessment of damages
on account of land presumably taken on account of the

Mr, Trask reported that the men on the Public
Welfare Department are being paid $4. per day and that
it was recently brought to his attention that three of

it was voted to pay them $3. per day.
It was decided to write to the'men on the Welfare
Department advising them of this change.

The'0hairman stated that he did not feel that the
street cleaning was being done properly, and requested
that the Supt. of Public Works look into this matter
and hand the streets of the Town thoroughly cleaned.

The Chairman reported that he had talked with Mr.
Holt concerning the Mulvey order and Mr. Holt informed
him that hecadvised Mrs. Mulvey to clean up the property.
He stated that Mrs. -Mulvey had expressed a willing-
ness to do So, but said that Mr. Custance recently consulted
with her concerning the possibility of the Town purbFiasthg
this property for street purposes and she wondered if the Town
really wished her to make improvements its the property under
those conditions.
Mr. Custance stated that they would need this land
if they were to put through a street later, and that this
might be a good time to make a deal with her. The
Planning toard has approved the layout of the street
tentatively, and the Board could make the layout which
could be completed at some later date.
