HomeMy WebLinkAbout1931-01-20402 SELECTMEN'S MEETING JAN. 20, 1931. A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held at the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building. Messrs. Burnham, Custance, Trask, Shannon and Hlake were present. The Supt. of Public Works and the Clerk were also present.. The Board viewed the reports of various departments and approved same, to be printed in the Town Report. The reports were as follows: Letter was received from Mr. Robert L. Ryder in which Cemetery,. Committee Health Inspector Reports Animal Inspector Milk Inspector approved. The Board therefore decided that there was nothing that could be done in regard to this sewer tax and so notified Mr. Ryder. Moody to operate a miniature golf course at the corner of Concord Avenue and Pleasant Street on Sundays during 1931. The following licenses were granted: Agent's License, Class 1. F. K. Johnson, 33 Bedford St. Colonial Garage, 1666-1668 Mass. Ave. Agent's License, Class 2. William G. Murphy, 109 Mass. Ave. Pasteurization of Milk Swenson Brothers, 210 Marrett Rd. Fair Oaks Dairy, 9 Sheridan St. ratrick Shanahan, 60 Pleasant St. Transportation of Garbage Cornelius Shea, Lincoln, Mass. Ernest K. Phelps, Concord Ave. Garage The Board considered the fact that at the present time the highway employees were paid double time for Sunday work. It was found that Belmont, Concord, Waltham and Watertown do not pay double,time. Arlington does pay double time for Sunday work. It was decided that inasmuch as this double time was a war measure, that it now should be reduced and that only time and a half be allowed. It was therefore decided to notify the Highway and Water and Sewer Debt. to this effect. The approval of the appointment of Edward W. Taylor as Forest 'Harden was received by tjle I3o-rd from the State Department of Forestry. 40 License Licenses Granted. Double time For Sunday Itork discussed. Approval of Forest Warden. The Chairman reported that the hearing on -the petition of Lexington to legislate regarcing bill boards was held today, &nd Mr. Wrightington was to be notified ' to communicate with Lowell ',Tayberry or Senator Hollis of Bill Boards Newton, re-arding the next hearing. 404 The `3oard also discussed the advisability of taking steps to employ'an assistant to Mr. White to learn how to do the highway work. This idea was produced many years ago bvt no action had been taken. It was now decided that something definite should be done. 1 1 It was decided to abate the ciiarge on the water guaranty on trje estate of John Stac.f, said amount of $45.. bViter bean- for 1929 and 1930. It was also decided to abate the Guaranty fAture charges on this guaranty. I4r. Custance reported that he had made a personal irvestigation of this case and found Mrs. Stack almost penniless owing to the fact that this guaranty has not been settled and therefore the estate cannot be settled. Mr. Custance presented plan showing the property proposed to be taken for school house purposes from Miss Stone in East Lexington. It wus decided to send a copy of the plan to Mr. Wrightington together with Miss Stone's mothers name to get Mr. Wrightington's opinion Stone on whether or not the Town can take the land by eminent property. domain if Miss Stone cannot make any arrangement to sell , the land to the 'Town. Letter was received from Mr. Albert B. Tenney in which he asked what the Br,ard intended to do regarding the plowing and sanding the ice on the approaches to the Boston and Maine station. Approaches The Board replied that they, had requested the Supt. to B.&.M. of Public Works to see that the sidewalks and drives station were sanded early in the morning before the Towns people plowed. go to the trains. Letter was received from the Town Counsel in which he.asked, in connection with the claim of Julia 14. Roberts against the Town., if the Town was covered by insurance. The Clerk replied that the Town does not carry any general Julia M. liability insurance which would be covered bj this case, Roberts but that Rupert H. For the week ending January 17, 1931. iIGITNAY DEPARTMFNT Work continued on Hill Street cleaning off ledge, drilling,.blasting, removing material and filling in low spot whereit ^.s planned to straighten the street. Because of icy streets, it was necessary to lazy sand every day. Catch basins were cleaned, several suface patches made and other maintenance work attended to. Next week work on Hill Street will be continued, maintenance work attended to and any necessary snow removal will be done. MOTH & SHADE TREE DEPT. Gypsy moth nests were cleaned and treated with creosote and this work will occupy the department next week. PARK DEPAPTB ENT General maintenance work was looked after and will be attended to..next week. ' WATER SEWER DEPARTMENT Water Maintenance Installed renewal for Ehlery, Cedar Street; service for Custance, Harding Road. Compressors and two men have been working for Highway Department on Hill Street. Two men have been painting the Viater Department equipment. We have been working on the excavation for gas trench, and have been puttin;- concrete floors 201 square in the warehouse of the Water Dept. section of the Public 9orks Building. On Friday, Janzary 16, 1931, we turned on the water to the new main on Wood Street. By Saturday, the main was filled, and no leaks were found. Regular maintenance work is planned for the week ending January 28, 1931. ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT Highways ' .'Mork on Old Allen Street survey.
