Hunt et al the relocation of Massachusetts Avenue and
establishing a building line .
The meeting was held at the Selectmen's Room, Town
Office Building, Messrs. Burnham, Custance, Blake, Shannon
and Trask were present . The Clerk, H. C. Whittemore was
also present.
Notice was sent to Daniel J. ®: 'Connell, Anstiss S.
Hunt, et al, Miss Mary D. Hunt, Mr. & Mrs William Hunt,
Mr. Nathan Bidwell, and Mrs . John Ballard of the meeting.
Mr. O'Connell was asked whether o" not he would take
345,000 in payment of the land to be purchased for the
relocation of Massachusetts Avenue. Mr. O 'Connell stated
t .at he would like to put a prick -uilding up. He did not
want to force anyone ' s hand, but he felt that he should
be entitled to do something and he wanted to know what the
Town was going to do about the situation. He stated that
he would take X60,000 for his property as a result of the
street widening.
Mr. Blake called attention to the fact that only
330,00.0 was appropriated for the Stuart-Marshall property
J and that all of the land that has been sold in that district
north of the Town Hall has been at a materially lower
price.
Mr. Blake called attention to the fact that the Town
Hall was sold *'or 350,000 and the Keeley Institute for
35,000; the price of the Aldrich property was 316,000.
Mr. O'Connell stated that he could do very well with
the property as it is if he knew where he was at . He
stated that it might he possible for him to negotiate
with the Boston & Maine Railroad Corporation for a right-
of-way across the Railroad property, and that he might
negotiate with the Hunt property owners for a right-of-way.
He felt that if he moved the building back, it would benefit
the Town, inasmuch as it would beautify the condition
as the oresent building would not be sticking out into the
highway. He stated that he did not care what the Hunt
heirs did, but he wanted 860,000.
Mr. Blake stated that he felt the Hunt property would
be less valuable in one ye'ur if Mr. O'Connell moved back his
Property inasmuch as it would rive better parking space in
lir
14 front of Mr. O 'Connell 's oroperty, as at present the parking
there is bad.
Mr. O ' Connell then was asked whether or not his
proposition of 560,000 stood if no taking was to be made
oy' the Hunt block at this time, and Mr. O'Connell stated
311
II that this proposition would stand. He also agreed to
-out his proposition in w ritin^• and present the same to the
Board at a later meeting.
Mr. Nathan Bidwell aJpeared to represent AnStiss S.
Hunt et al. He stated that when fir. Hunt had been approach-
ed first about getting an appraisal, he did not feel that he
was in a financial position to bear any of the expense,
but, however they desired ' to cooperate with the Town.
He stated that none of the Hunt owners were ready to say
w} at the value of trLe property w oald he . he desi ^ed some
information on the iiures presented by the appraisers, and
was given the final firu-'es of Charles H. Howe, Walter
Channing and Charles A . Gleason. He stated there was one
five year lease in the block now which woald have to be
considered if my taking were made.
