HomeMy WebLinkAbout1930-10-09P� 10 nd��yy TJ SPn-CIAL MEETING OCTOBER 9, 1930. A special meeting was called. for the purpose of discussing with Mr. Daniel J. O'Connell and Anstiss S. Hunt et al the relocation of Massachusetts Avenue and establishing a building line. The meeting was held at the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building, Messrs. Burnham, Custance, Blake, Shannon. and Trask were present. The Clerk, H. C. Whittemore was also present. Notice was sent to Daniel J. O:!ConneLl, Anstisz S. Aunt, et al, Miss Mary D. Hunt, Air. & Mrs William Hunt, Mr. Nathan 'Bidwell, and Mrs. John Ballard of the meeting. Mr. O'Connell was asked whether or not he would take 345,000 in payment of 'the land to be purchased for the relocation.of Massachusetts Avenue. Mr. O'Connell stated t_ -:at he would like to put a prick 'Luilding up. He did not want to force anyone's hand, but he felt that -he should "^e entitled to do something and he wanted to know what the Town was Roing to do about the situation. Iie stated that he would take $60,000 for his property as a result of the street widening. Mr. Blake called attention to the fact that only $30,00.0 was appropriated for the Stuart -Marshall property j and that all of the land that has been sold in that district north of the Town Hall has been at a materially lower price. Mr. Blake called attention to the fact that the Town Hall was sold for $50,000 and the Keeley Institute for $5,000; the price of the Aldrich property was $16,000. Mr. O'Connell stated that he could do very wbll with the property as it is if he knew where he was at. He stated that it might be possible for him to negotiate 1iith the Boston &'Maine Railroad Corporation for a right- of-way across the Railroad property, and that he might negotiate with the Hunt property owners for a right-of-way. He felt that if he moved the building back, it would benefit the Town, inasmuch as it would beautify the condition as the oresent building would not be sticking out into the highway. He stated that he did not care what the Hunt heirs did, but he wanted $60,000. Mr. Blake stated that he felt the Hunt property would be less valuable in one year if Mr. O'Connell moved back his property inasmuch as it would ..-i ve better parking space in front of Mr. O'Connell's property, -as at present the parking there is bad. Mr. O'Connell then was, asked whether or not his proposition of $60,000 stood if no taking was to be made of the Bunt block at this time, and Mr. O'Connell stated 7 R 1 that this proposition would. stand. He also agreed to out his proposition in w ritin. and present the same to the Board at a later meeting. Mr. Nathan Bidwell ao-geared to represent Ansl�tiss S. Hunt et al. I3e stated that when fir. Bunt had been approach- ed first about gettin,- an appraisal, he did not feel that hb was in a financial position to bear any of the exoense, but, 3aoweverr they desired '.to _ cooperate with the Town. He stated that none of the bunt owners were ready to say wr.at the value of t:�Le property w ould ,.e. lie desi^ed some informati o:-. on the i*ures presented by the appraisers, and was given the final fi;;?ures of Charles L. Hovre, Walter Channin,T and i7harles A., Gleason. He stated there was one five year lease'in the block now '°vhich would have to be considered if any takinF were made.
