HomeMy WebLinkAbout1930-10-09 10 ••.�mo_i nd�yy SPhCIAL MEETING - OCTOBER 9, 1930. A special meeting was called for the purpose of discussing with Mr. Daniel J. O'Connell and Anstiss S. Hunt et al the relocation of Massachusetts Avenue and establishing a building line . The meeting was held at the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building, Messrs. Burnham, Custance, Blake, Shannon and Trask were present . The Clerk, H. C. Whittemore was also present. Notice was sent to Daniel J. ®: 'Connell, Anstiss S. Hunt, et al, Miss Mary D. Hunt, Mr. & Mrs William Hunt, Mr. Nathan Bidwell, and Mrs . John Ballard of the meeting. Mr. O'Connell was asked whether o" not he would take 345,000 in payment of the land to be purchased for the relocation of Massachusetts Avenue. Mr. O 'Connell stated t .at he would like to put a prick -uilding up. He did not want to force anyone ' s hand, but he felt that he should be entitled to do something and he wanted to know what the Town was going to do about the situation. He stated that he would take X60,000 for his property as a result of the street widening. Mr. Blake called attention to the fact that only 330,00.0 was appropriated for the Stuart-Marshall property J and that all of the land that has been sold in that district north of the Town Hall has been at a materially lower price. Mr. Blake called attention to the fact that the Town Hall was sold *'or 350,000 and the Keeley Institute for 35,000; the price of the Aldrich property was 316,000. Mr. O'Connell stated that he could do very well with the property as it is if he knew where he was at . He stated that it might he possible for him to negotiate with the Boston & Maine Railroad Corporation for a right- of-way across the Railroad property, and that he might negotiate with the Hunt property owners for a right-of-way. He felt that if he moved the building back, it would benefit the Town, inasmuch as it would beautify the condition as the oresent building would not be sticking out into the highway. He stated that he did not care what the Hunt heirs did, but he wanted 860,000. Mr. Blake stated that he felt the Hunt property would be less valuable in one ye'ur if Mr. O'Connell moved back his Property inasmuch as it would rive better parking space in lir 14 front of Mr. O 'Connell 's oroperty, as at present the parking there is bad. Mr. O ' Connell then was asked whether or not his proposition of 560,000 stood if no taking was to be made oy' the Hunt block at this time, and Mr. O'Connell stated 311 II that this proposition would stand. He also agreed to -out his proposition in w ritin^• and present the same to the Board at a later meeting. Mr. Nathan Bidwell aJpeared to represent AnStiss S. Hunt et al. He stated that when fir. Hunt had been approach- ed first about getting an appraisal, he did not feel that he was in a financial position to bear any of the expense, but, however they desired ' to cooperate with the Town. He stated that none of the Hunt owners were ready to say w} at the value of trLe property w oald he . he desi ^ed some information on the iiures presented by the appraisers, and was given the final firu-'es of Charles H. Howe, Walter Channing and Charles A . Gleason. He stated there was one five year lease in the block now which woald have to be considered if my taking were made. The meeting- adjourned at 8 25 P.M.
