SELECTMENIS MEETING
August 19, 1930.
A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen
was held at the Selectmen's Room, Town Office
Building at 7:30 P.M. Messrs.Burnham, Custance,
Blake and Trask were present. The Supt. of
Public Works and the Clerk were also present.
Water abatement in the amount of $94.14 and
Sewer abatement in the amount of $115.57 were
signed by the Board.
Abatements.
Application was received from Frank W. Perkins
of 536 Massachusetts Avenue asking permission to F. Perkins
install gasoline tanks in the capacity of 2000 gasoline
gallons at 542 Massachusetts Avenue. application
The Board considered the application and
inasmuch as the property is not located in the business
district, under the Zoning Law, they decided
to inf orm Mr. Perkins that they could not entertain
his application. They also decided to inform
him that he should apply to the Board of Appeals
for permission to carry on the business of
repairing cars in what was formerly a blacksmith
shop.
At 8 P.M. the following bids were received
on the sewer construction loan of $15,000. Sewer Don.

The bid was awarddd to Estabrook & Co.
Letter was received from Richard A. Cox,
2965 Mass. Ave. in which he expressed appreciation
of the construction of Mass. Avenue from the Bluff
to Lake Street, giving credit for the contours
and beauty of the road. The Board acknowledged
receipt of the letter with thanks.
Estimate of the cost of construction of the
8" water main in Winter Street was received from
the Supt. of Public Works, totalling 22,220.
It was decided to rive this information to the
residents of Winter Street desiring the water to
see if they would be willing to sign the guarantee.
Mr. Harry A. Burgess who operates the Marrett
Gardens miniature golf course and golf practice
course and also one on Bedford Street applied for
a permit to have these amusements on Sunday.
The Board decided that they could not grant
any permit for Sunday entertainment inasmuch as
these places are being. operated in a residential

Letter was received from Mr. Vinton W. Mason
of Woodl ,end Rd. in which he stated that the dogs

It was decided to mail a copy of his letter
to Mr. David Govan of 54 Woodland Rd., the
complaintant and see if Mr. Govan still felt that
the dogs owned by Mr. Mason were the ones disturbing
the neighborhood and ask him to name other persons
who might have dogs, causing this trouble.

the matter further and bring in his recommendation

Complaint was received of the noise caused by

Elliot Hadley, Editor of Lexington Times, came
before the Board to call attention to duplication of
Old County Road. He stated that the Old County
Road from Marrett Road to the Lincoln Line was still
called under that name, and Old County Road off of
Allen Street, also an old County Road running from
Cedar Street to a dead end on the Wellington property.

The Board discussed the matter of occupying
Public Works
the Public Works Dept. and stated that at least
Department.
$5400.00 should be obtained to concrete the floor
of the building so that the automobiles and
equipment of the Town could be put in the building.
It was decided to set as a tentative date for
a town meeting Sept. 22, 1930, so that money could

papers could be prepared and the matter of building
line establishment on Mass. Ave. in front of the
O'Connell property could be taken up.

Supt. of Public Werke:
For the week ending August 16, 1930.
Highway Department, I I
The Department has completed the construction
of the roadway of the extension of Clarke Street
and is now finishing the sidewalk, making a very
fine entrance to the Playground* Construction
of Bertwell Road has been started, the excavation
for the roadway having been nearly completed and gravel
for fill already applied and approximately 1000 ft.
of drain pipe laid and the building of the catch
basins started.
Surface patches have been set in Lincoln St.,
Chandler St., Vine Brook Roadi East St., Highland Ave.
and Adams Street. Next week the department will
continue the construction of Bertwell Road and attend
to the regular maintenance.
Moth and Shade Tree Department.
Brush and undergrowth on Belfry Hill has been
cut and cleaned. Next week the, department will out
brush and trim trees.
Park Department.
Hastings Park has been graded, cleaned up,
and seeded and the regular maintenance attended

to during the past week. The department will be
oecupidd with the regular maintenance next week.
Water and Sewer Dept,
Water Maintenance
Water services have been instal led as foll ows :.
Parker, Bertwell Road; Bartlett, Bedford St., Misticke
Co., Bedford Street; Audick, Tucker Ave. We repaired
a service for Cobb on•Bloomfield Street. Repaired
leak in main in Locust Avenue. Seven men worked six
hours spreading gravel at the carbarn property.
Water Construction.
We have laid 200► 6" pipe in Tucker Ave.
Laid 2000' 1" stebl pipe for F. J. Spencer from
Laconia Street to his property. This pipe was
laid on top of the ground. Made the connection at
Child's garage on AAgust 18, 1930. The connection
at Bowker Street will be made today and the water
turned on to the 16" main. One hydrant installed
on Tucker Avenue,
Sewer Maintenance.
Service for Bartlett, Bedford Street.
Sewer Construction.
Two carloads 8" sewer pipe unloaded. We have
laid 300► 8" sewer pipe in Fottler Avenue and have
built three manholes.
Engineering Department.
Highways .
Completed relocation plan of Burlington Street
from North Hancock Street to Grove Street.
Sewers
Grades for Fottler Avenue sewer.
Continued work on Town Sewer Study.
Water
One man (full time) on Mass. Ave. 16" main.
Miscellaneous.
Three days spent in preparing information for
Metropolitan Division of Planning regarding 1931
