SELECTMEN 'S METWING
July 15, 1930.
A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was
held at the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building,
at 7:30 P.M. Messrs. Burnham, Cust ance, Blake, and
Trask were present. The Supt. of Public Works and
the Clerk Pro-tem were also present.
Bids At 8 P.M. bids were received on the $175,000.
received loan from the following:
Faxon Gade & Co. 2.42 Discount.
Bank of Commerce & Trust . 2.38
First National-Old Colony Corp. 2.485
Lexington Trust Co. 2.395 "
The bid was awarded to Bank of Commerce & Trust
at their bid of 2.38 discount.
Pole Pole location order was granted to the Edison
location Electric I11. Co. for one pole on Washington Street
approximately 600 feet southwesterly of Warren Street.
Common. Common Victualler 's license was granted to the
Victualler's Canteen Lunth Company, 1 Ellery Street, South Bostcn,
License to do business at 1792 Mass. Avenue.
Water Letter was received from Edwin B. Worthen relative
Department to the Workmen's Compensation Insurance for the
insurance. Water Department, in which he stated that a represen-
tative of the Employers ' Liability Assurance Corporation
Claim Department desires to meet Mr. Ross, Mr. Scamman,
and someone representing the Selectmen. If, after this
conference, they may renew the insurance for a six
months trial, they will then determine what their final
action will be.
The Board decided to notify Mr. Worthen that they
would like to have a representative of the company
meet them on Tuesday evening next, July 22, 1930
at 8:15 P.M.
Standpipe Bill of the Town Counsel was approved in the amount
bill of $51.25 for advice relative to connections from new
mains to standpipe.
School House Bill of the Town Counsel was also approved in the
bill amount of $50.00 for services on the Allen Street School
House Lot.
Sidewalks Sidewalk orders for Edward Wood, Henry D. Love,
and Nellie Viano were approved.
Wood St. Notice of a meeting was received from the County
hearing Commissioners of a hearing on the relocation of

Wood Street from Massachusetts Avenue• to the Bedford
line, a distance of 8500 feet, to be held at the County
Commissioners Office, September 2, 1930 at 10 A.M.
Letter was received from the Town Counsel, S . R. Eminent
Wrightington, in which he asked that before the Selectmen Domain
adopt any further orders for the layout of streets or Takings
sewers or any other order involving a taking by eminent
domain to have the form submitted to him in advance
because of a recent Supreme Court proceeding regarding such
takings .
Cdr. Wesley T. Wadman, 23 Hancock Street, came W.T.Wadman
before the Board relative to securing an Innholder's Innholder's
license to do business at the Edgewood, R3 Hancock License
Street, Lexington. Mr. Wadman stated that he had
talked with Mr. Glynn. of the Board of Appeals, and he
was informed that the matter was in the hands of the
Selectmen.
Mr. Wadman presented a petition signed by residents
of Hancock Street stating that they have no objections to
the granting of a license to Mr. Wadman.
The, matter was laid over for one week until con-
sideration is given to it.
Mr. Sam B. Rome, 97 Mass. Avenue, requested that his Sunday Sales
Sunday Sales license be transferred to Edward M. Chick license
to dq business at the above address, and the Board voted transferred.
to do the same, with no additional charge.
Order for extra work on Mass. Avenue, from Marrett Extra work
Road to Lincoln Street, was signed by the Board to do on Mass. Ave
the following: Deliver and set 18 stone bounds at a cost
of $90.00.
Duplicate agreement was signed by the Board for T. B. Hosp.
water to the Midilesex County Tuberculosis Hospital. agreement.
Proposal of the Western Waterproofing Company, Standpipe
Inc. , 82 West Dedham Street, Boston, Mass., was signed repairs.
by the Board to perform the following work:
"To furnish and apply Western's Asphalt Water-
proofing to the inside face of standpipe, spraying same
din one or more coats as may be necessary to cover the
three year guarantee below.
In addition to this waterproofing work we propose
to clean the inside of the tank wall and the bottom,
removing any dirt, debris , etc. which may have. accumv.-
lated since we finished our work about five years ago."
Price for same being $741.00.
In regard to the matter referred to by Mr. James A. J.A.Peirce,
Peirce, 40 Marrett Road, relative to constructing a fence Fence.
adjoining his property on Pollen Road, the Supt. of
Public Works reported that he felt the street should be
widened at that point instead of erecting a fence which
would be quite expensive and the funds for doing the work

are not forthcoming thin year.
It was decided to nitify Mr. Peirce that the
Board has not decided as yet whether they will have
a fence erected or fill in to widen the road.
Wilson In regard to the case of Mrs. Rosa Wilson, who
claim was aided by the Town and also by the Beales, Bridge,
and Gilmore Funds, it was decided to notify the Town
Counsel that the town aided Mrs. Wilson in the amount
of $128.26 in 1923 and 1929, and she was aided by the
Trust Funds in the amount of $133.50 for those years,
and request that he put in a claim for these amounts.
Lite Mr. Blake reported that two life preservers had
preservers been placed at the Reservoir with fifty feet of rope
attached to each. Suggestion was made that a ladder
might be placed there for possible use in the winter.
Whistle Mr. Blake also reported that he was investigating
the matter of the whistle, and he was not sure that
a siren could be used. He suggested that an arca
heater might be used to heat the whistle apparatus.
O'Connell The Board of Selectmen decided to appoint Charles A
damages . Gleason as one member of the Board of Three Appraisers
Member . to consider the matter of land damages in connection
appointed. with the O'Connell property 1775 of 1757 Mass. Avenue.

HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
The surfacing of Concord Avenue has been completed.
Repairs to surfaces of Oak Street, Baker Avenue
and Taft Avenue have been made.
Catch basins and gutters were cleaned and general
maintenance attended to.
Traffic lines have been painted on Mass. Avenue.
Next week the department will be occupied with
regular maintenance.
MOTH & SHADE TREE DEPT.
The department trimmed branches and dead wood
on the trees in Hastings Park and will be occupied
with this work next week.

PARK DEPARTMENT
Leveling and grading at Hastings Park and regular
maintenance work has been done during the past week
as well as some work on the new tennis court at the
Center Playground.
Next week the department will attend to the
regular maintenance work.
WATER & SEWER DEPT.
Water Construction
Completed Pleasant Street water main as far as
Mass. Avenue.
Started construction on 16" extension at Arlington
line
Four carloads of 16" pipe have been unloaded and
trucked to Mass. Ave., East Lexington.
Water Maintenance
Hydrant reset at Mass. Avenue & Pleasant Street
which was struck and damaged by taxi.
Service installed on Bertwell Road for Judkins,
and for Smith on Locust Avenue.
Sewer Maintenance
Service installed for Smith on Locust Avenue.
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT .
Highways
Profile and grade stakes on Sargent street.
Laid out lines for parkting spaces on Mass. Avenue.
Water
Located new 12" water main in Pleasant Street.
Located new 6" water main in Valley Road.
Miscellaneous
Stakes for stone bounds at car barn property.
Staked out new lots at Westview Cemetery.
Completed plan of Mass. Avenue Fire Station and
got blueprints.
Set four stone bounds at new school house lot
on Allen Street.
Started plan of Valley Road.
Street line on Forest Street at Hancock School.
