March 11, 1930.
A regular meeting of the Hoard of Selectmen
was held at the Selectmen's Room, Town Office
Building, at -7 .30"P.M. Messrs. Custance, Blake, Shannon
and Trask were present. The Supt. of Public Works
and the Clerk were also present.
At 8 P.M. hearing was declared open on the
application of the New England Tel. & Tel. Company
for permission to construct a conduit in Massachusetts
Avenue, from Elm Avenue to the Lexington -Lincoln line.
Mr. Henry Valliere, 2287 Massachusetts Avenue
was present and inquired if .that meant that all
of the wires now existing on the poles were to be
put underground. Mr. Kent of the New England Tel. &
,Tel. Co. was present and explained that this conduit
was simply to take care of the additional lines_ that
were going through to Fitchburg. They were not
going to remove any of the present lines, and if they
did, it would not make any difference inasmuch as
the Edison wires are now on the poles and the poles
could, not be removed. He stated that as soon as the
Edison Company took their wires down, the conduit that
is to be installed would take care of the wires now
on the poles.
Mr. Bedros Bashian inquired whether it would.
destroy any of the trees. He was informed that t]Us
was simply an underground proposition and would not
destroy any of the trees inasmueh:as. it would be in
the street.
At 8;05 P.M. hearing was declared open on the
E.E.I.Co. petition of the E.E.I.Co. for permission to locate
petition one pole on Lincoln Street, approximately 130 feet
granted. southwest of Massachusetts Avenue.
No persons appeared to object,, and it was
voted to grant the petition.

Petition was received from the Lovell Bus
Line Inc. for permission to operate busses frcm
Lovell
the corner of Woburn and Lowell Streets over the

Lowell Tuanpike to Bedford.
Petition
It was evident that this was apparently an error
and that the petitioner meant to petition to operate
busses to the Burlington line. The petitioner was
to be so notified, and if the proper petition came in,
the Clerk was instructed to advertise a hearing.

Letter was received from Edward P. Merriam
enclosing copy of two petitions of residents of
Winchester and owners of property requesting that
a street be laid out across private lands from
Cambridge Street, Winchester through to Lexington.
A report of the Town Engineer on this petition
was that the Town Engineer of Winchester informed
him that Winchester was not interested in a layout
of a street across this territory.
It was decided to notify Mr. Merriam to this
effect. .
Notice of a suit against the Town of Leonard
K. Dunham, Woburn Street, was received and notice
was forwarded to the Town Counsel.
Letter was received from Elmer A. Lord & Co.
in which they stated they had placed $20.,000
insurance on the Public Works Department Building,
the same to be held binding until such time as
the building is taken over by the Town. They
stated also that they would check up on the
sprinkler system.
Letter was received from Charles A. Peavy,
45 Batterymarch Street, Boston, requesting that
he be given some insurance to place for the Town.
The Board acknowledged receipt of his letter.

Letter was received from the Planning Board Status of

Letter was received from the Box 52 Association
inviting the Board to attend a meeting to be held Invitation from

The Board decided to send the invitation to
the Chief of the Fire Department and ask him to
attend the meeting to represent the Board.
The Board called the Board of Assessors
before them to find out if they were willing to
serve another term. All of the members seemed to
be favorable toward serving. Mr. -Walter Black was
not present, but the other two members of the
Board, Mr. Eugene H. Kraetzer and Mr. Charles E.
Ferguson expressed their willingness to serve
another term.
The Board therefore voted to appoint Walter G,
Black, Eugene G. Kraetzer and Charles E. Ferguson as
the Board of Assessors.
Inasmuch as the Government officials at
Washington declared that the flags on public
buildings and other places should be at half mast
for the period of 30 days after the death of
Chief Justice Taft, it was decided to have the Town
flags displayed also.
It was voted to increase the pay of the Sealer
Inerea"se pay of Weights and Measures $75.00 for the year. This
Sealer of will increase the appropriation as already arranged
Weights & with the Appropriation Committee.
Measures. Mr. Trask was requested to take the matter up
with the Appropriation Committee for their approval.
Reduced rate, It was voted to grant the Teacher's Club
Teacher +s the reduced rate of X25. for the use of Cary
Club. Memorial Hall on April 3, 1930 for a cormertand
dance.
Mr. Custance reported a request from Mrs. M.AtWalsh
2243 Mass. Avenue, for the abatement of the sewer
assessment against her property. the Assessors abated
Abatement the taxes upon the property inasmuch as her income

sewer sanatorium. I
assessment It was decided to notify Mrs. Walsh that she
should apply to the Sewer Department for apportionment
of the sewer assessment and each year this would be
apportioned on her tax bill and each year it may be
abated .when the taxes are abated as long as she owns
the property.
It was decided that the Town Engineer be
instructed to lay out the corner of. Hayes Avenue and
Layout Hancock Street at the property of E.C.Stone,
corner, make the proper curve so as to make easy access to
Hayes Ave. Hayes Avenue.
The sketch of the corners at Franklin, Weriam
Streets, and Somerset and Abbott Roads was presented.
Mr. Blake stated that he wanted to give a par�of the
land at the corner of Somerset Road and Meriam Street.

It was voted to approve $500 for the April
19th celebration, although this amount was not
' included in the appropriation prepared by the
Appropriation Committee. It was understood
originally that the Tercentenary Committee would
include this appropriation in their account, but
the April 19th Committee desired to get started
sooner than the Tercentenary Committee, and it
was therefore decided to give the April 19th
Committee the appropriation of $500.

For the week ending March S. 1930.
Highway Department
April 19th
Appropriation.
The work of widening Hill Street was continued.
A large amount of ledge has been encountered and is
slowing up the work to some extent.
The construction of a culvert across the low
land opposite Sylvia Street was started and will be
finished during the present week after which the dump,
at this place, will be leveled and kept as clean
as possible.
Catch basins were cleaned, holes in roadways
were patched and other maintenance attended to.
Next week the widening of Hill Street will be
continued and the regular maintenance work.
Moth and Shade Tree Department.
Gypsy moth nests were treated with creosote
in Grove Street, Robinson Road and Burlington Street
and this work will be attended_to next week.
Park Department
The Department_ attended to the regular_ maintenance
work and next week will be'oecupied with this work
and also the levelin:=- of material dumped in Hastings Park.
Pater & Sewer Departments.
Sewers have been flushed and one hydrant has been
relocated on Curve Street.
Regular maintenance work occupied the department
the balance of the week.
Regular maintenance work is contemplated for the
week ending March 22, 1930.
