Davies (Planning Board Liaison), Olga Voronina (Scribe) 1 Brief Trees at Depot/Emory Square The selectmen did not agree with the petition to reconsider removal of red maples at Depot/Emory Square. The project will go ahead as designed. Underground Electrical Wires Patrick Mehr is continuing work on his proposal to remove the electrical wires from poles and to put them underground. DAC members were concerned about the cost of connecting the wires to each individual dwelling after the wires along the streets are moved underground. DAC members decided to review Patrick's web site before expressing opinion about this issue. 2. Approval of Minutes May minutes were approved. 3. Presentations Season Ice Cream at Gingerbread Construction Company - Signage 10 Woburn Street John Gosselin was representing Season Ice Cream. The company had applied to HDC for a sign permit. The proposed sign is thought to be installed above a window facing Massachusetts Avenue. Another window on the Woburn street side will be used to sell ice cream. The colors of the sign will match the colors of Gingerbread Construction Company sign. DAC felt that that the proposal puts the sign above a 'wrong' window The sign above this window will not be effective enough. A sing hanging off the main entrance to the building might be more effective and more noticeable from the three sides of the building, including the bike path. A green &white sign will be more visible against a brick wall. Unfortunately the Woburn Street elevation was missing. DAC also felt that a temporary sign could be used while the design issues around the permanent sign are being resolved. Sprint PCS, Wireless Communications -Antennas Church of our Redeemer, 6 Meriam Street During the informal hearing, Tim Green explained that Sprint PCS is planning to install six antennas inside the church steeple. Wooden clapboard panels and decorative details at the steeple will be replaces with the fiberglass replica to allow for signal penetration. Glass in existing windows will be replaced with acrylic. The whole steeple will be repainted. DAC asked for additional information, including pictures of the existing steeple, a sample of the proposed fiberglass replica, and pictures of similar installations by Sprint PCS. DAC thought that the project is going in the right direction. 1 Shell Gas Stations at two locations -Signage Corner of Lincoln Street & Marrett Road Woburn Street Shell Carolyn Parker presented Shell's plans to install additional signs and to change the colors of the canopies, signage and buildings. The application to the ZBA for increasing the square footage of signage has been already submitted. The proposed changes include painting canopies bright yellow with a red accent band, white support poles, and painting the buildings a combination of white & yellow with red lettering. New sign with prices is proposed at Marrett Road location. DAC strongly felt that the proposed color scheme is too bold for gas stations located in the residential area, where no competitors are present. The current gray with yellow accents color scheme is much better then proposed one, and is appropriate for residential area. The size of a proposed price sign should also be reduced. DAC recommended to preserve the currently existing color scheme of both gas stations, and to protect existing trees at the Marrett Road location. Khushboo India Restaurant -Signage 1723 Massachusetts Avenue The restaurant is proposing to replace an existing projecting 'Carolinas' sign with a new sign of the same size with the golden lettering on both sides. The sign will be hang off the existing bracket. DAC supported the proposed design. Mass Buddhist Association - Landscape Dharmakaya Center, 319 Lowell Street Mr Chang has received an approval from ZBA for the parking lot layout. The approval was conditional on the DAC's advice on planting and screening of the neighboring residential property A site plan and the photographs of the Center were presented. Barbara Hulsizer and John Frey will visit the site and advise the owners on types of bushes to plant. Waldorf School -Signage 739 Massachusetts Avenue The sign was already approved by HDC. DAC felt that the presentation of the sign was not very professional, however the implemented sign will probably look acceptable. DeWolfe- Signage 80 Hayden Avenue A brushed aluminum DeWolfe sign is proposed on the DeWolfe building on the Route 2 side. No sign will be installed at Hayden Avenue, but the building number there will remain. The proposed sign will be 4'H x 10"L x 2"D DAC felt that the proposed sign design is appropriate. The next DAC meeting is on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at 8:00 PM in Room 111 2
