January 4, 2000
Present:

Bruce H. Creager(Scribe)
Board of Selectmen: Betty Eddison, Liason
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 8:00 by the Chairman, Steve Hurley
Approvals:
The minutes of both November and December meetings were approved.
Discussions:
1. 231 Bedford Street, Signage (Represented by the Organic Planet)
Issue of sign visibility The present sign is located near the West front
boundary, next to a high hedge of adjacent residential property, the hedge blocking view
of the west side of the two sided sign. Proposal is to relocate the sign so that it can be
seen by traffic moving in both directions. DAC's advice was being sought prior to a
formal application to the Board of Appeals.
Recommendation: DAC referred the applicant to the Lexington "a Guide for
Signage" for basic presentation material and criteria. Next there was a discussion of an
effective relocation of the existing sign, concluding that a location at the Eastern
boundary abutting the neighboring commercial property would achieve both visibility
and clarity The applicant was advised to return for formal presentation at the next DAC
meeting in February with the following presentation material;
Existing Site/Plot Plan, indicating present location of sign.
Existing conditions photographs, at least 4"x6" color format.
Proposed relocation of the sign, taking into consideration required setbacks for
clear veiwing angles exiting the site, striped parking layout and driveway , dimensioned.
Details illustrating curb protection and mounting(and possible lighting) for
relocated sign.
DAC recognized that the present location created a hardship due to limited
visibility and that relocation was necessary to solve the issue effectively Steve Hurley
recommended that application to Board of Appeals be made as soon as possible in order
to get in line for their next meeting in February, following the DAC February 1 meeting.
2. Marrett Square, ATM machine and signage.
Requires a special permit from Board of Appeals for ATM machine in CN
district. Awning with Bank logo is a projecting sign and requires approval.

Meeting January 4, 2000 (continued)
Photographs, site plan showing location of ATM and digital image of existing with
proposed inserted,presented to the DAC
Recommendation: DAC observed that there was a possible conflict between
the proposed projecting awning and the existing pergola. It was also felt that the
proposed ATM station exterior element could be centered in the brick wall between the
glazing at Anton's and the existing single doorway to the proposed ATM room, thereby
shifting the ATM element forward and way from the pergola. There was no indication
as to the dimension of the projection, assumed to be between 1'-10" and 2'-0" The
awning color should be compared with the blue color used at Anton's for as close a
match as possible.
DAC recommended that the application be approved subject to notation.
John Frey will formulate a letter to the Board of Appeals.
3 Trinity Covenant Church, requires a special permit from the Board of Appeals
for installation of site lighting in a residential neighborhood. Site plan indicating
proposed location of new fixtures, site lighting photometric site plan and lighting fixture
cut sheets and a copy of application presented to the DAC.
Recommendation: DAC reviewed the above material with the following C
observations;
The application states that the fixture lamping will be Metal Halide, while the
manufacturer's cut sheet indicates High Pressure Sodium lamping. DAC requests
clarification.
The application indicates Tamping of 175 watts. The manufacturer's fixture cut
sheets indicate photometrics for 175 watt High Pressure Sodium lamping. The site plan
photometrics appear to be for the 175 watt HPS fixture, not Metal Halide. DAC
recommended that due to the brightness of Metal Halide, the wattage be reduced. DAC
seeks clarification.
The proposed fixture is not shielded,in direct violation of Lexington Lighting
Bylaw DAC recommends selection of the same design in the shielded version, or
another appropriate design, which complies with lighting bylaw in residential
neighborhood.
DAC recommended that the application be disapproved-resubmit.
