Minutes of October are not yet available for approval.
1. Sign for 17 Hartwell Ave., Boston Properties, Rick DeAngelis:A special permit is required for this sign from the
Board of Appeals.Boston Properties would like to replicate the Logica sign at 32 Hartwell Ave.The new sign will be 4'9"
tall and 5'9"wide,double-faced,and not lit at this time although it may be lit externally with a spot in the future. The sign
will be aluminum casing with a bronze finish and perimeter planting.Text on the sign will indicate tenant name, property
address and building owner
Action advised:Be cautious that the planting does not block the sign as is now happening with the Logica sign. The sign
appears too busy—drop"USA,Inc"from the line"A division of Tyco International"and eliminate the line"Research and
Development."If possible eliminate the word"Polyken"although this may be necessary according to corporate stan-
dards.
2. Minutes of 9/9/97 approved.
3. Lexington Mailboxes:although not on the agenda,we discussed the fact that Lexington US Post Office mailboxes (both
inside the PO and outside) often seem too full and seem to be risky boxes to deposit outgoing mail. Calls to the Boston
office would be a good idea.
4. Jim Nihan did not show up to discuss a Hartwell Ave. sign
5. Preliminary Waldorf HS plans:John Ellis did not feel prepared to meet with the DAC,but gave early plans to John to
( present at our meeting. The Waldorf School.would like to tear down the rear wing and add a new rear wing and a front
porch to the brick building. The front porch replaces a porch that had been torn down. (see photos in Bev Kelley's
book).
Questions raised:Has a study been done on the traffic and parking implications? Will a"change of use"from business to
school require a traffic study?Members of the DAC were uncomfortable with the requested variance for an 8' setback at
the back of the lot. This abuts a residential area.A variance would also be needed for the front porch. The DAC ques-
tioned the large size of the building in this neighborhood.
6. Harrington Road:Steve Hurley is meeting with Peter Chalpin tomorrow morning. There will be an info meeting with
abutters next week.Steve will encourage moving the rhododendrons on the island asap.
7 Pet Mania:John Frey contacted the HDC (Steve Politi)who suggested that the HDC might approve a directory sign
(similar to the sign on the Spaulding property next door) However,at the HDC meeting the group rejected this idea
(Steve was not present)and approved a sign to hang from the porch.
The meeting adjourned at 10:10.Thanks Betsy for your hospitality!!
