Minutes of 12.10.96 will be provided for approval at next meeting
1. Sign Guide:Letters of approval received from the Lexington Center Committee and the Lexington Chamber of Com-
merce. The DAC voted to endorse the letters and take the sign guide to the Selectmen.
2. Flag:Dick Vyce has a suggestion for keeping the flag on the green permanently unfurled. He will send the suggestion to
John.John may refer the suggestion to the DPW's George Woodbury
3. Sign:4 Hartwell Place,Hughes Aircraft,Joe Messier and David Lovering
The building is very difficult to locate since it is impossible to locate from Hartwell Ave.Two 36"x 24"h signs with 3"
posts and 60"total sign height were requested. They would be white signs with navy and black lettering. The signs
seemed inconsistent in layout and therefore somewhat confusing. It was suggested that:
the address be in a colored band at the bottom of both signs in white letters
4 Hartwell Place be in upper and lower case letters instead of all caps
Reconnaissance Systems be on one line
the layout of the two signs be consistent
Itek use the flush face sign rather than the framed detail
The DAC approved the use of two signs, and requested that the height and location of the building sign be passed by
John before presentation to the Board of Appeals.
4. Sheraton Site Plan:
Drawings were supplied to the DAC,which the Sheraton plans to use in applying for a special permit for which they need
site plan review The DAC felt that it could not make any recommendations based on these very old drawings. These
drawings do not include the Route 2A work which the Sheraton will have to consider in it's plans. It was not clear
whether these plans had been approved in concept initially-John Davies will talk to Bob Boyer. It was suggested that
minutes from the 1989 meeting when these drawings were"approved"be obtained. There were several areas of concern
which these drawings did raise.Areas of concern are:
the leveling of the high point
arbitrary tree planting
lack of sensitivity to topography and vegetation
80's style of building-potpourri look
the design is not coordinated with the Marret Rd reconstruction-quoted from the
Zoning Bylaws p.21 re:conservation,"(b) .is designed in a manner that is compatible with the existing
natural features of the site and is compatible with the characteristics of the surrounding area."
civil engineering issues (run off will be altered because of 2A construction
signage issues
lighting issues
Cranberry Hill was suggested as an example of scale and successful integration of parking into the landscape.
John will report to the Planning Board (copying the Board of Appeals and the Conservation Commission) that the DAC
feels that due to the lapse of time, these drawings are unacceptable, and new,up-to-date plans should be presented.
5. "Fresenius"National Medical Care Wall Sign,124 Spring Street,95 Hayden Ave:
No one was in attendance from Fresenius.A 35'2"sign was proposed, which the DAC felt was much too large. In com-
parison,we have rejected large signs which were proposed by the Chinese Church,HCHP and OUI-all in that area of
Hayden Ave/Route 2 No site plan was presented by the requestor.
6. A Design Review Committee has been formed for Emery Park which includes 2 from DAC, 1 from the Center Commit-
tee, 1 Chamber member,2 from Traffic Committee,2 Transportation,2 from Garden Club,2 from Friends of Emery
Park. This ad hoc group will put together an RFP to a design firm to solicit a proposal. This will be done by June 1.
7 Vending Machine discussion on hold for Jack Nolan.
