Meeting called to order at 8:05.Minutes of October 8, 1996 meeting were approved. IDEO,an international design and product development firm, was represented by David Cajolet and Douglas Dayton.Steve Colangelo, building owner, was present. They were asking the DAC for guidance A 9 minute video was presented. There was a scale model of the stacking cubes, roughly 7' 6" high by 8' 0" wide. They will be 2' cubes, lit from the ground. The faces will be aluminum. Some may have ribbed glass images which give the effect of movement as you pass by The DAC suggested that a full scale mock-up would be very useful to be sure the sculpture was large enough to carry They will let John know when it is ready to be viewed. The DAC felt supportive of this interesting and creatve signage. Benches were not approved by HDC at USS Lexington,Tower Park nor Cary Hall. A study group of Bruce,Tom,John, and Carl will look into a proposal for benches and planting in front of Cary Hall. Approved were those benches for the East Lexington Fire Station and for the Main Fire Station. Also approved were two behind Cary Library, four replacing existing at Belfry Park, four in Hastings Park, one behind Visitors' Center, and two at Dunkin Donuts. The desirable trash container by Craft Cleaner's dumpster is part of the contribution of benches at Dunkin Donuts. This ends the benches in the Central Business District. There are two white benches on the porch of the East Lexington library The upright yews there will be pruned. Brian Gilbert,Town arborist, has a fund for trees to which people may contribute in order to honor someone. Seasons Four had sent in an illegible drawing supposed to present a proposal for an "English Garden" It is to be just below the sidewalk, and extending the full width of their land. This location is entirely Town property There is an existing stone wall at the sidewalk. They propose a wide garden with a stonewall behind it.They would contribute the flowers and maintain it.A DAC member equated it to"Adopt an Island" The concerns were maintaining the scale and definition of the street as it continues from the east along Massachusetts Avenue and Tower Park.A section through the wall, garden and sidewalk is essential. The DAC felt it could not consider this piece of paper until we receive a readable presentation. They had no one at the meeting. Sign Guide is in the hands of Eric Carlson for the Chamber. page 1 of 2 Newspaper Vending Machines were discussed.Joanne Gschwendtner had sent ! photos of the housing of some from Cannel, California. It was a good springboard to begin to think about what we might select. It seems to be possible to have all the boxes the same material and color, with each having their own logo. The Beacon Hill final ruling gives towns some clout.Jack Nolan offered to do some research and bring back recommendations to the DAC.John, Steve, and Betsy offered to help. Betsy inquired if we might wish to do something about the proliferation of American flags at gas stations and stores. One flag is patriotic; three flags are banners. Adjournment was at 10:25.
