Discussion.
1 Shell Station at 286 Lincoln Street (Five forksli
John Frey had sent a letter to Conrad Decker of Decker&Company(engineer/designer
of the proposed station upgrading)with personal comments and recommendations
regarding landscaping. Bruce Creager suggested that the Committee endorse Mr.
Frey's recommendations.
Conrad Decker indicated that he had no objection to Mr.Frey's suggestions.
Mr. Decker had witten a letter indicating that he and Shell had responded to DAC
concerns as follows:
a. Shell agreed that the dimension from grade to the underside of the canopy
would be reduced from 14'-6" to 13'-8"
b. Signage on the canopy would be reduced so that there would be only one
Shell Pectin on each side of the canopy, not internally illuminated. The name"Shell"
would not appear on the canopy.
c. The free-standing sign would remain unchanged.
d. The spandrels will be installed but will not have any signage on them.
e. Shell has agreed to the installation of trees.
f. Shell prefers not to reduce the depth of the canopy fascia.
g. It is felt that the flat-roof canopy is more appropriate that a suggested hip or
gable roof shape, because of compatibility with the existing building.
There was extensive discussion about the depth of the fascia. Proposed depth is 2'-6',
with an additional six-inch yellow band at the bottom of the fascia, making the total
depth 3'-0" Mr. Decker indicated that Mobil's fascia is typically thirty-two inches,
Citgo's is forty-eight inches. The thirty-six inch depth is prefered by Shell for
consistency with other stations and for compatibility with the canopy structure.

The committee agreed that the preference is for the fascia depth to be reduced to a total
of 2'-6",including the six-inch yellow band, and will so recommend to the Planning
Board.
The committee agreed that a flat-roof canopy would be preferable to the hip or gable
roof shape.
Concern was expressed about lighting. The committee requested that a lighting plan
be submitted with indications of existing, proposed, and removed lighting fixtures,
and with a clear description of the fixtures (i.e.lighting catalog cuts). Mr.Decker
agreed to submit such information to Steven Hurley, who will distribute copies to
DAC members for their review and comment prior to the Board of Appeals hearing.
2 Craft Cleaners Building
Ellen Epstein of Overall Music,a tenant in the Craft Cleaners Building, indicated that
she and other tenants are interested in developing signage for the side of the building
that faces the bikeway, and is seeking DAC advice and input.
The committee felt that a broader scope of work was appropriate for the building,to
improve its appearance and commercial viability Suggestions included flower boxes,
awnings, and an enclosure for the dumpster. The DAC would support efforts to
upgrade the appearance of the building, including appropriate signage. The committee
suggested that Ms.Epstein discuss with the building landlord strategies for developing
an overall upgrade plan, including utilizing a design professional.
( 3 Emery Parlc
John Frey and Steven Hurley met with the Cooperative Bank and presented three
proposals, including one involving the taking of Bank-owned land for the Lexpress

5 Harrington Road:
Mr. Hurley indicated that according to John Vinton,Peter Chalpin has advised that the
intersection of Bedford Street and Harrington Road is not controlled by the state, but is
under the jurisdiction of the Town. This simplifies signalizing,if that is what is
desired.
Peter Chalpin had agreed to forward the police accident reports to John Vinton to
resolve for the record the accident rates at the interseciton. Mr.Chalpin has indicated
that the intersection has the highest injury rate, although not the highest in total number
