Approvals:
Meeting was called to order at 8:10 PM by John Frey
Minutes of April meeting were approved.
Second part of minutes of February meeting were approved.
Discussion.
1 15 Denot Square- Barber Pole:
Proposed internally-illuminated projecting sign-a barber pole 28 inches high,
projecting 11 inches from wall-for new barber shop at 15 Depot Square was
reviewed. Concern was expressed for the multiple-mirror reflector on the mounting
bracket, the placement of the unit on the building, and for the appropriateness of
internal illumination.
The Committee felt that the notion of a traditional barber pole for the shop is
appropriate. The materials provided to the Committee did not adequately illustrate how
and where the pole would be mounted.
The Committee agreed to recommend approval of the concept, subject to working out
details such as the actual design of the unit, its placement on the building, and its
illumination.
2. Shell Station.Five Forks
Drawings were reviewed which depicted a proposed new canopy and new curb cuts
and planting islands. The canopy is the standard Shell design, and measures 50 feet
by 36 feet, 14 feet to the underside and 17 feet to the top. It has the Shell logos on the
canopy face and island spandrels.

The canopy design is essentially unchanged since the previous discussion (DAC
meeting May 10, 1994). At that time, the Committee did not recommend approval of
the special permit for the canopy
The design of the curb cuts and planting islands was revised and appears to address
most of the Committee's concerns regarding vehicular circulation, but no trees and
only spotty landscaping are shown.
John Frey will write a letter expressing concern about the proposal.
3 Harrington Road:
The temporary fence is up, at least partially Orange sawhorses are also still in place.
The fence is designed to be in sections which can be lifted out.
John Vinton showed proposals for revisions to the intersection of Bedford Street,
Harrington Road and Hancock Street.
The Committee agreed that Harrington Road should not be closed off altogether.
It was expressed that the design of the intersection should be part of a larger study
about traffic safety in the town.
4 Bridge School Sian:
Bob Ossman reported on evaluation of sign mockup at Bridge School on April 21,
1995 Consensus then was that the eight-foot long sign was appropriate. Mr
Ossman provided site plans indicating the agreed-to sign location and additional
recommended alterations to the island at the school entrance, including sidewalk,
curbing, directional signage painted on pavement, and plantings. The planted area is
to be placed futher back, so that the sign is in the planted area rather than in back of it.
5 Emery Park/Depot Square:
John Davies indicated that proposals will be presented by Steve Hurley and Barbara
Hulsizer at the Planning Board meeting on May 15, 1995.
Barbara Hulsizer indicated that the Historic Districts Commission likes "Scheme A ,
that which has an island between the bus dropoff and the Cooperative Bank building,
because of the historical connection with the notion of transportation as an important
element of Depot Square.
6 Minuteman Statue Island:
John Frey met earlier today with Steve Hurley,Dick Spiers(DPW) and Rick White,
who is requesting a speedy resolution to the issue of the "tempOrary" traffic island in
front of the Captain Parker statue. Mr.White's concern is getting it done quickly, and
generally prefers a simple, modest scheme.
Three schemes for redesigns of the area were discussed. The one prepared by Bob
Ossman was generally favored. There was discussion about phasing the project, so
that the extension in front of the statue would be built first. Bus stop in front of the
library may have to be moved. It was suggested that the brick paving be changed to
stone dust, and that granite curbs, granite bollards(no chains) be provided. The
second island could be of grass, with granite curbs.

Mr. Frey indicated that although Mr.White is interested in a very speedy conclusion, it
is most important that the design be done thoroughly and not in a rushed fashion.

the DAC:

proposed improvements to the bike path area at the rear of the bank.
