NOTES BY Gary Larson
1 August meeting minutes were approved as amended. Under item 6, paragraph 2 -
Delete(who lives in Lexington).
2 Sifm_Review• Michael Leonard presented design for a projecting sign for the UPPER
STORY BOOKSTORE above the door to the second floor next to THUNDER.
Design is to include brass or brass colored anodized aluminum letters, on 3/4 inch
marine plywood painted a soft green. Two plywood panels would sandwich a 2 inch
steel frame, so that the total depth of the sign would be approximately 3 1/2 inches. A
material, the same as the letters, would be wrapped around the perimeter thereby
boxing in the steel frame. The sign would be anchored the the brick wall and centered
above the door The sign will not be lit. Sign has been designed to reflect his logo
and create a positive image for the new store. DAC voted to recommend approval of
sign.
Tree pruning was discussed as a subsequent issue. The trees are quite thick and
should be pruned and thinned from the bottom up. John to talk with Brian about tree
pruning in the center.
3 Memorial Bench Proposal: Bob McAulay proposed a memorial bench west of the E.
Lexington Branch Library The bench location would not interfere with the view of
the buildings and would be positioned near the 8" shade tree about 25 feet back from
the road. The bench would be used during events by the Waldorf School and the
Folen Church, but would be dedicated to Mr McAulay's parents, who reside in the
area and enjoy the beauty and history of this area. Betsy Whitman expressed concern
about too many benches in the area that may detract from the handsome historic
architecture. Discussion ensued about improved planting in the area. There was
some question about how the bench would be attached to the ground and what are the
base materials. Mr. McAulay agreed to prepare plans addressing the issues raised and
present at the December meeting, 12/13/94, 8 PM.
4 Will review final draft of the Signage Design Review Guidelines at the December
meeting.
5 LexHAB house. Woodland Road: Marianne Lazarus reported on the progress of the
LexHAB house construction on Woodland Road. During excavation, a gas line from
Woodland Road to the school was uncovered and had to be relocated under the new
path alignment. The Gas Co. has agreed to repair several items along the new path.
Trenches have been dug on both sides of the large Oak tree at the beginning of the
path. Because of line of sight issues and the excavation around the tree, Marianne
believes that the tree should be removed. The transition of the new path into the old
path should be made smoother and the area should be naturally planted.
The house construction is being supervised by Minuteman Tech. Windows have been
ordered, corner boards will be installed, roof color has been selected by the
neighborhood. The shingle will be a GAF architectural style, weathered gray color.
The house will be painted an off white with dark gray trim.
Fill will be required to provide access to the kitchen door. It was suggested that the
layout for the driveway, parking, walks, planting, etc. be prepared by the Minuteman
Tech and submitted to the DAC for review
6. Benches: Pads are set for benches at the Minuteman. Need to plot bench locations at
Emery Park. Cost of benches now approximately$975.00. This does not include
cost of installation.
Other suggested bench locations include Mass. Ave. in front of St. Brigid's, Worthen
Road in front of the apartments,Marrett Road,Hartwell Ave.,Hastings School, etc.
Should a sub-committee be selected to select alternate bench locations. John Frey,
Tom Coffman, Steve Hurley,John Vinton will form a sub committee to review
additional bench locations and consider locations for site furniture such as bike racks,
drinking fountains, trash containers, etc. Meeting scheduled for 11/12/94 at 7:30 at
John Vinton's.
7 Town Report: Report to be reviewed at next meeting.
8. Emery Park: Report by Steve Hurley Met two weeks ago with Garden Club, etc.
Reaction was positive. Voted on three schemes. Appeared that the design with
LexPress relocated near Warm Hearts-Cold Noses was favored. Would allow for
Park expansion toward the Bank. Chamber of Commerce was opposed to the
concept. The next step will be to meet with the Planning Board and Historic District.
It appears that LexPress may be the lightening rod for the design of the park.
An illustration and/or model of the plan for the proposed park would present the
design in the best light and generate support for plan. A study group is needed to
make a recommendation and establish a direction and time schedule for the project.
Question raised on financing. Steve indicated that there is considerable interest in
donations for the project. A fund in the amount of$10,000.00 in memory of Jack
Eddison has been established.
9 Town Report: Report near completion. Discussed desirability of photograph of DAC
for the Town Report. Consensus was that it was good P.R. Concern regarding
cost. Karen Bechtel to bring camera with b/w film to next meeting.
Next Meeting to be 13 December 1994.
Adjourned at 10:15 PM.
Respectfully submitted:
Gary Larson
