Meeting called to order at 8.00 by John. Hubert's very prompt minutes of
the last meeting, both at the Selectmen's with Rick White and subsequently our
meeting beginning at 9:00 will be approved at the May 10, 1994 meeting.
Bench Paul Crowley is donating bench in memory of his mother It will be
placed near the Bikeway beside the Adams School path and opposite the Great
Meadow Designer of the Lester bench, Dan Blair had made a model for DAC to
see. It will be constructed of Deer Isle, Maine, granite of a warm hue. A golden
apple tree will be across the Bikeway A safety discussion ended with DAC
recommending using the John Frey site plan unless some design safety
criteria must be met.
Shell Woburn and Lowell Sts. John had spoken with them and they want
flowers, not trees. Peg quoted an article from N.Y Times revealing that the more
( trees that are planted, the more money is saved.
Battle Green Shell John will add a note to the Board of Appeals regarding
the addition that the DAC recommends trees be planted on Bedford St.
Varian, on Hartwell Ave. The site plan for the structure for the housing of
pumping and filtration equipment for ground water remediation was presented.
The landscaping called for Japanese black pines. John and Peg
recommended native white pines to blend in with the area.
DeWolfe sign Peter Cooke, of Wellman Assoc. explained that 80 Hayden
Ave. was to be their corporate headquarters, with two other locations in
Lexington. He proposed, with a sketch, a rather large sign facing Rte. 2. After
some discussion of bill boards, by-laws, design guidelines, and general comfort
level for signs in this town, the DAC unanimously recommended rejection
of this proposal.
Benches Bench vandalism in general was discussed. It was thought that
immediate repair was the best reaction. Hastings Park: DAC approved
John's plan for bench locations after discussion of moving the one near Mass.
Ave. and Hastings Rd. to a better location in the the same general area. It was
planned that the existing benches be put in a more heavy-duty location such as
the basketball court. Visitor's Center at Bikeway The DAC approved the
location of the Nashoba Valley Pedalers' site to be against the Bikeway side of
the Visitors' Center The other for that location is going to be determined by John
before the HDC presentation. Mass. Ave. near Meriam St Two benches
were approved In May busses will unload here and park on Worthen Rd.
Mass. Ave. at Town Offices. It was felt that there might be a friendlier
location, perhaps nearer the entrance and in the shade. This will be studied
further Memorials are desired in East Lexington for Bettie Clarke, Jacquie
Smith and Mr Leonardo East Lexington Library One bench near the
driveway was approved. Other East Lexington locations were discussed.
Near brook on left just beyond Watertown St., East Lexington Fire House, Tower
Park (replace with teak), Bow St. Park, Adams Pond. Members were asked
to look at these sites, take a photo of their favorite spot for a bench in East
Lexington. The problem of putting benches or planting in front of the "Movies
and More" block was brought up. It was described as a much needed site for
beautification.
Woodland Road This discussion opened with the some of the residents
requesting that the house be turned 90 degrees on its axis and the path be
below it. Suggestions of procedure ranged from neighbors making a list of
guidelines, the Charles Moore process, John to ask Marshall Derby if LexHab
can retain an architect, to conduct a charette. Tom observed that Gary has done
a lot of groundwork - could he present the site plan. It was decided that DAC
and Woodland Rd. residents meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wed. April 20 at the site. Tom
will chair
Bikeway Bridge: Jerry Van Hook and Wendy Reasenberg, with Hubert's
editing, had sent off a letter with criteria to Bob MacDonald at Mass. Highway
Department District 4 MHD now doing soil borings and abutment testing. The
plan would be to use Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA)
funds to restore the Park Ave. bridge and to keep granite abutments on other
bridges. The principle of maintaining the present appearance is something
Hubert and Alan McClennan will pursue. John felt that lowering 2 1/2 feet (not 4)
at Maple St. is sufficient to improve conditions. Hubert will present this to Bike
meeting and new findings to next DAC
Tom's Signage Guidelines. He produced a comprehensive draft. DAC to
give comments to Tom within 2 weeks (by April 26).
Barbara Hulsizer's plan will come up at our next meeting.
Rte. 2A Proposal will be discussed with Selectmen on Monday May 2, 1994.
Adjournment was at 11 :25 Scribe: Betsy Whitman
