Present: John Frey, Betsy Whitman, Kerry Brandin, Tom Coffin, John
Vinton, Steve Hurley, Barbara Hulsizer
(nests Jackie Davison (Eliot Community Human Services, Inc.) and
Judi Ozuransky (Lexington Council for the Arts)
AI'l'ENTION NEXT MEETING HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM APRIL `TH
TO
APRIL 13TH AT 7.30 TO HEAR A TAPE OF
JAY CARTER BROWN SPEAK ABOUT THE HISTORY OF
TOWN AND CITY DESIGN REVIEW BOARDS.
1 Minutes of February 9, 1993 approved with minor changes.
2. Board of Appeals: a) Jackie Davison (representative of Eliot
Community Human Services, Inc., 186 Bedord St.) seeking advise on
their freestanding wood sign, with white background, dark grey
letters and blue logo; size would be 3 feet by 5 feet and 5 feet high.
The proposal came with a plan showing the sign's location, which we
approved of, and new prosposed plantings, which we had some
questions about.
DAC Response: We want to see paint chips and a more detailed plan
of the proposed landscaping. Jackie will get the paint chips and John
will contact the Landscape Architect for more information.
b) Museum of Our National Heritage: seeking advise on a temporary
freestanding sign that will announce their current events. Sign
frame is dark New England green trim, 3 feet by 6 feet. Sign frame
will be placed in buried PVC pipes at times when they want to
announce a current exhibit.
( DAC Response: We approved the frame for the sign but question
their chosen location for the sign. Given all the other signage that
is there we need to meet at the site to review the location. John
will call Mr Levitt at the Museum.
Tom Coffin suggested that there be a handout, for those who are
seeking our advise on signs, that would inform them of what we need
to see before we can make a decision. Suggestions were: paint
chips, a dimensioned drawing, a photo of the area where the sign
will be placed and perhaps we would provide a sample illustrative
drawing with the above details and other suggestions.
3 Emery Park-Depot Square: John and Steve talked with Mr Crowe
at Depositors Trust about Don Olson's plan for this area. The added
features were schemes for the bank providing the bank with drive-
up banking. Three schemes were presented at this meeting, none of
them would work. So its back to the drawing board for more
schemes for a remote drive-up area.
Don's current plans for Depot Square include: Existing Conditions,
Proposed Green Areas and Proposed Scheme
4 Meriam Parking Lot: John met with the Meriam Hill Neighborhood
Association and presented the parking plan to them showing an
entrance and an exit from and onto Meriam St. This received a
negative reaction.
DAC Response: Betsy thought that an entrance only from Meriam St.
would be more favorably accepted and could be presented to their
board.
5 Bike Path. John and Steve presented a plan proposed by the
Friends of the Bikeway for a mini park rest-stop at the new Nursing
Home on Maguire Road. The mini park would be on their property
The plan was greeted with interest but the Nursing Home declined
having the mini park on their propertyAv4_ZS . ktr

Shrub relocation at intersections in Lexington will be reviewed by
the Tree Committee which includes Brian Gilbert, our new Tree
Warden, Saturday March 27th on the Bikeway Plans will be drawn up
to reflect any changes and submitted to the State DPW
John told us about a memorial bench(es) to be given by the Charles
River Wheelman in honor of Al Lester, a fellow cyclist killed by a
drunk driver during a road race. Need to determined a location.
- DAC Response: A granite bench along with a trash receptacle,
possible bike rack and maintaince allowance was suggested
Locations to consider along Bike Path are Garfield St, Tower Park,
Bow Street, Waldorf School and Great Meadows and Parker Meadows.
6. Tree Committee: Brian Gilbert unofficially says matching grant
funds of $13,500 (from SBA through the State Dept. of Env Affairs)
will probably be approved to assist purchase of street trees in
Lexington. Also, we may have a chance to get a grant form U Mass.
for a prototype comprehensive street tree plan and inventory He
hasn't heard yet about another $2000 matching grant form the State.
7 Buckman Tavern: Guy Doran wants to give a bench or benches to
be place at Buckman Tavern to honor the 100th year anniversary that
his father started his farm as well as Guy's uncle who along with his
father contributed so much to the Town.
DAC Response: We are looking at a round bench to be placed around
the linden tree, the tree to the right of the front door of the tavern.
The bench would be placed on a brick foundation.
8 Historic Signs. The Cultural and Visitors Collaborative needs a
representative form the DAC. NPS to pay or directional signs to
historic sites in town.
DAC Response: Steve Hurley volunteered to be our representative.
9 Lexington Common: Latest plan was voted against by the Planning
Board due to increased neighborhood traffic and the density of the
units per acre.
10 Lexington Ridge: Developer responded favorably to DAC
recommendations regarding plantings and the orientation of the
community building. But will probably not use our recommendation
for slight variations of the same color on the residential buildings.
They want a grey color for the residential buildings with the
community building another color
NEXT MEETING: APRIL 13, 1993, TUESDAY 7:30PM, ROOM 111
Respectively submitted,
