1 Minutes of 5/12/92 meeting were approved with the following corrections.
l s
o John Freys working with Jackie Davison with regard to sign guidelines for
merchants.
2. Lowell Street Mobil Station: The meeting to review landscaping options to accompany
construction of a new canopy was attended by Michael Carson of Gale Associates representing
Mobil plus abutting neighbors and the station owner Mr Carson presented the proposed
landscaping improvements and options for discussion. Neighbors expressed the desirability for a
hemlock hedge at the house perimeter as well as at the station perimeter The present hedge at
the abutting house is mature but overgrown and in poor condition. Hemlock must be maintained
once or twice a year in order to remain in good condition. Neighbors prefer a ten foot height.
Neighbors also requested screening at the street. The following was agreed to by Mobil at the
meeting:
o Street trees, 3 1/2" caliper red maples (6), will be provided along the side street
frontage along with a 6'0" high yew hedge. An opening to the grass area will be
maintained for access.
o A new Hemlock hedge will be planted at the station perimeter and at the property
perimeter The station will provide annual maintenance of the hedge which will
be allowed to grow to a 10'-0" height.
o Planting will be planned for the fall following start of construction of the new
canopy
3. $ike Path: members commented that feedback on initial use of the bikepath has been very
positive.
4 Emery Park. Review of recent activities of the Emery Park subcommittee was provided by Betsy
Whitman. Barbara Hulsizer noted that the Civic Improvement Committee of the Field and Garden
14 July 1992 1
Club will be taking up Emery Park as their next agenda item. The Garden Club had orchestrated
the last redesign of Emery Park which was named for a past Garden Club president. The
committee will likely focus on planting and the park proper leaving issues of traffic and context
to the Emery Park Committee. CIC members include Nell Walker, Barbara, Betsy, and Melinda
Vinton. Jack Eddison expressed encouragement for club involvement but members must
understand that the club will not control the process. Interest in the park is townwide.
Improvements must come from a broad consensus.
5 Cary Library. Issue of flagpole removal at the library was raised. Barbara will check with Rick
White regarding flagpole's fate.
6. Bikew.y• Bikeway realignment requested by the town was approved by the state DPW to be
issued as a change order to the contractor This will allow additional spaces to be retained in the
Miriam Street lot. Bob Ossman has prepared a sketch showing how the lot may be laid out given
the realignment. John Frey emphasized that this is a starting point and that a detailed survey will
be needed before a parking layout can be finalized. Jack Eddison felt that the DAC will be
involved in review of the plan as it develops.
The bikeway is a major feeder to the center and as such should be considered in center
improvements such as a bikeway teller at the bank. There will be a low key approach to this.
Perhaps Steve Hurley will pursue.
7 Benches: Status report was presented by John Frey
8. My Cleaners: Second meeting will be held tomorrow at Rick White's office with My Cleaners
owner regarding landscaping improvements at Countryside. First meeting based upon John Frey
sketch was upbeat. The town is encouraging a town/merchant partnership. The town is
attempting some level of matching funding in parallel with merchant effort.
9 Sign Guidelines: see attached agenda for John Frey report. Peg Read will join the next sign
guidelines committee meeting as an additional DAC representative.
10. Tree Committee: Several trees in center have been replaced. Peg Read has prepared a memo
regarding caring for the trees. She will attach literature on pruning guidelines and standards.
Limbing up is feasible in the center for better viewing of signs as long as carried out within
guidelines.
11 Bast Lexington: discussions with Mr Sun have been delayed due to Mr Sun's recuperation
from an auto accident. Efforts to resume have as yet been unsuccessful, presumably because Mr
Sun is still in recovery
12. July Meeting: will be held as usual unless notified otherwise. Date: July 14th @ 8:00 pm.
Several members will be away on vacation.
