MINUTES for THE DESIGN ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MAY 14, 1991
ATTENDEES. John Frey, Bob Ossman, Betsy Whitman, John Vinton,
Kerry Brandin, Barbara Hulsizer
1. MINUTES: Minutes from last meeting (April 4, 1991) were approved with
minor changes.
2. GUIDELINES: John Frey reported on a meeting of the East Lexington
Association beautification subcommittee on May 8. Rick White made a plea
to the business and retail people to work with the Town (DPW) to improve
the neighborhood. Jack Eddison made an excellent presentation
quoting the guidelines and encouraging their use.
3. BENCHES: 6 benches arrived in town today, Betsy Whitman reported.
4 LIGHTING COMMITTEE: Myla Kabat-Zinn gave us an update on the
progress of the town and Boston Edison they are waiting for a rate
for the Iwsake lights. Boston Edison will soon change the bulbs in the
buildings owned by the town at a savings of $60,000.00 for the town. Boston
Edison will test compact iridescent bulbs on planned test sites. Selectmen
open to considering a buy-out. It was suggested the town get a light inventory,
evaluating spacing and light level.
5 BOARD OF APPEALS: Reviewed Battlegreen Shell. John Frey will
work on incorporating more trees planted in granite curb planters, rather than
using the tree grates as the plan shows.
Projecting sign on Giroux Building at the Fancy Flea Antiques was
approved. Movies and More did not get approval to increase the number of
posters form 4 to 5 and will be restricted to 3. John Frey will write a letter to
DeWolf suggesting a closer look at their parking lot to soften the
asphalt. There were questions raised about the free standing that DeWolf
is suggesting, concerning placement, need, lighting and how to best use
the sign.
6. TREE COMMI ITEE: Nell Walker, Jack Eddison, John Frey and Barbara
Hulsizer met 4-24-1991 to draft guidelines for
tree planting and spatial concepts for the Battlegreen
and Buckman Tavern. Next meeting 6-22-1991 and 6-2-1991.
7. COUNTRYSIDE: The Countryside Neighborhood Association met
at the Vinton's April 24, 1991 to discuss action on the
Park at Countryside. Barbara Hulsizer presented a concept
design for the park and received lots of good input form the
neighborhood and the town. Next meeting June 6, 1991.
8. PARKING AT MASS. AVE. AND MERRIAM ST Betsy Whitman
( has proposed to eliminate a parking space at the corner of
Merriam St and Mass. Ave., enabling the cars coming from
Merriam St. to make an easier and safer turn onto Mass. Ave heading east.
A typical neckdown was proposed. We all wanted a bigger picture of this
area including the Minute Man Statue and the islands in front of it.
Bob Ossman will look into the area. Jacqueline Olson has redesigned the
islands using the same placement and size but changing the materials to
granite curbing and granite-setttps. yea, ,Fr4
9 EMERY PARK. Don Olson has compiled/ a summary of questionnaire
comments and has started circulating it to subcommittee members.
10. NEXT MEETING: July 1991, Tuesday, 8:00 p.m.
