2 Board of Appeals actions/comments
2a Mass Avenue Sunoco Station Planning Board comments were
discussed Proposal was withdrawn
2b Crafty Yankee sign Planning Board commented that the sign
was too high and large The committee discussed whether the sign
should be free standing or attached to the building Construction
details were questioned The flush contilevered sign arm seemed
fragile Members commented that sign submittals should come with
building elevations that illustrate the context Otherwise,
assessment is difficult Committee recommended that the sign be
relocated to the building where it would help identify the shop
3 East Lexington Neighborhood Association has expressed
enthusiasm for the Design Guidelines and wishes to help in any
way with the implementation Several merchants including Berman's
and Kerry's Catch expressed interest in environmental changes and
improvements
4 Memorial Tree Fund concept for funding new trees in town by
means of memorial gifts was discussed Maintenance must also be
considered as well as purchase and planting There may be a
combined interest with this and other Public Trusts already in

how need input from others Ideas to be solicited from Dave
Williams, Rick White, and representatives of town boards

this area
6 Adopted Traffic Islands program has been very successful
The Wilson Farm islands and those of Doran's and Lexington
Gardens all look very attractive and have been well maintained
The DAC will write a letter of appreciation to the businesses
involved The plant materials on the Mass Avenue island @
Wilson's Farm have gotten a bit high for traffic safety The
Lexington Field and Garden Club island at Worthen Road also looks
very well

7 Sign Bylaw DAC will begin an effort on the sign bylaw as
time permits Several sign related issues were discussed at the
meeting
7a @ new island at the Green, yellow DPW signs are
proliferating again This has seemed to have spread to the island
at the Unitarian Church as well
7b @ center of town, on axis with Waltham Street, is a large
green directional sign for Bedford and Concord, etc DAC
questioned whether there was another way to handle this
communication less obtrusively
7c @ Lincoln Street Nature Path, signs are proliferating also
DAC input may be needed to suggest a better grouping of memorial
and instructional signage at that site
7d Welcome to Lexington signs are a good idea that needs to be
carried out tastefully in order to make appropiate first
impressions Jack Eddison has been discussing with the Chamber of
Commerce
8 Design Guidelines Final Comments DAC members are to send
final comments to the review committee (Rick Bechtel, Peg Read,
John Frey, Jack Eddison) for comments to the consultant
9 New Issues
