2 RE Design Guidelines Review
John Frey reported that the Design Guidelines should be finished in 3
weeks with a seminar for the DFM given by the Dion firm in April Kerry
Brandin asked if we might attend lack Eddison arranged with Rick White
to obtain more money to finish the report making it a quality document
except for the graphics which will not be top quality, given the expense
of that process
3 RE Board of Appeals - approved the signs for
-Mixed Doubles projecting sign , 3 Merriam St
-Children's Hospital , 11r40 Waltham St
-Roth &, Strong , Inc , 21 Worthen Rd
-Mobil , 396 Waltham St , smaller back lit Pegasus
-Gulf Oil , 324 Marret Road , change price s gn to a more vertical
form, rather than the horizontal with a dark blue background
-Jehovah s Witnesses, Inc 196 Woburn St , appeal denied for buffer
strip less; than required feet doesn t give enough room to park
-Movies and More Mass Ave internally lighted (e) isting) sign
The sign is already in place It was noted that the sign wasn t
that well designed and wasn't place in the most appealing location on
the building There was an objection to all the paper signs in the
window It was suggested that perhaps in the contract with the landlor
there would be guidelines concerning signage Peg Read drafting a letter
about the signage to be sent to the Board of Appeals by March 22
4 RE Earth Day/Earth Week , April 22 through April 29
a) Grower's Commitments
Provide calorcannuals etc ` r .-lards near their establishments
b) The Town (Dale Gaasland) with back-up from the Garden Club and the
DAC provide long term revamping of islands
c) DAC will provide design assistance to Dale who volunteered to make
signs for islands crediting grower 'installer of- annuals
Check with .Joe Morieno about the approval o such signs If
sponsored by town it should be approved The problems that
the signs present are one more th.nn to maintain and one
more piece of clutter Appreciation and acknowledgement in
the paper or a certificate might replace the sign on the
island
d) Street tree planting r plant ng strips
L -Dale says trees are now planted by the Town on a "squeaky wheel "
basis
-Suggested planting in front of the Toyota building should be
completed as it was part .of the conditions in
obtaining the approval for their second flnnr addition
-Suggested planting Arbor Sap Tree n East Le: :ngton in the
island at Mass and Pleasant Sts or the strip in front of the Mo' ies
and More buildings or at Robinson Cemetery
-DAC/Island Committee could make up a master list of specific
locations where such trees would be desirable List could be submitted
to Board of Selectmen for approval and possible implementation over an
extended period The enclosed preliminary East Lexington list might
be a first phase to be undertaken during the first year (or two years
depending on budgets? Announcement of such a program could be included
in Earth/Day Week ceremonies and promotion
-John and Jack would like to see trees planted on the Muzzy St side
of the Shawmut Bank Rick White wants a plan to take to the bank to
encourage them to plant the trees
-Jack is looking for a good name for the Tree Fund How to define
the way this fund would be structured , defined , rules and procedures is
another question
RE Historic signs for the Battle Green
-Jack eports that the signs he is looking at are like the
Wayside signs with a picture that tells the story The signs are made
of a plastic substance that if they are damaged for whatever reason
they can be replaced
