HomeMy WebLinkAbout1957-03-nd-AFSC-min.pdf tit Report of the Additional Fire Station Committee This report submitted to the Annual Town Meeting, Town of Lexin,'. ya Masnac= zretts , March 197, has been prepared under An ,'f bc '.0 y c the following vote adopted at the 1956 Annus r Town 1,1; .ng VOTED To create an Additional Fire Station Committee consisting of one member of the R;ard of Select- men, one member of Lhc Planning Board one member of the -Appropriation Cormiaito and we members of the Board o� Fire Comwriissioncrs, the members to be designated by the Chairman of the respective Board or Committee, to review the recommendation of the Board of Fire Commissioners that the Town construct an additional fire station on the parcel of land now owned by the Town that is situated on Marrett Road near the reservoir and to report to the 1957 Annual Town Meeting The Board of Fire Commissioners has recommended that an additional fire station be constructed on land owned by the town on Marrett Road near the reservoir This recommendation is based upon the Board' s analysis of the fire protection coverage of the town and takes into consideration the recommendations of the New England Fire Insurance Rating Association This asso- ciation makes studies of the facilities for fire protection in communities in Massachusetts and other New England states and sets insurance rates for fire insurance companies For many years the Association has advised that a third fire station be located in the southerly part of town to provide faster response to fires in that area than can be made from the existing stations The Association has made the same recommendation to this Committee The Committee has reviewed the present fire protection cover- age of the town provided by the personnel and equipment housed in the two existing fire stations It has made a study of the number and location of existing buildings in the area which could be served from a new station situated in the vicinity of the reservoir on Marrett Road In addition, the number and loca- tion of fifes occurring in certain sections of this area since I 1952 have been analyzed Also, the Committee has considered the effect of future development of other areas of the town on the fire department housing program -2- At the present time, there are several matters under con- sideration, bUt not yet finalized, wb ch xray have some effect on the fn- e fir. rrctee ion p. ogram of the town The most imporuai t of these are 1 The reconstruction of Route 2 2 The traffic survey being made by the Town Traffic Comnittoe 3 The proposed construction of a road from Wood Street to Bedford Street with its effect on the development of the industrial arca ij. The proposed extension of Eldred Street to Grove Street 5 Additional residential subdivisions The Committee feels that a decision on the question of whether to construct a third fire station in the reservoir area should not be made until the foregoing matters have reached a more complete state of development Accordingly, the Committee recommends that the town adopt a vote at the 1957 Annual Town Mooting to continue the Addi- tional Fire Station Committee for the purpose of making a further study and report to a subsequent Town Meeting but not later than the March 1958 Annual Town Meeting Respectfully submitted, Ralph H Tucker Harold E Roeder Paul A Buckley William P Fitzgerald Wilbur M Jaquith, Chairman
