Annus r Town 1,1; .ng
VOTED To create an Additional Fire Station Committee
consisting of one member of the R;ard of Select-
men, one member of Lhc Planning Board one member
of the -Appropriation Cormiaito and we members
of the Board o Fire Comwriissioncrs, the members
to be designated by the Chairman of the respective
Board or Committee, to review the recommendation
of the Board of Fire Commissioners that the
Town construct an additional fire station on the
parcel of land now owned by the Town that is
situated on Marrett Road near the reservoir and
to report to the 1957 Annual Town Meeting
The Board of Fire Commissioners has recommended that an
additional fire station be constructed on land owned by the town
on Marrett Road near the reservoir This recommendation is
based upon the Board' s analysis of the fire protection coverage
of the town and takes into consideration the recommendations of
the New England Fire Insurance Rating Association This asso-
ciation makes studies of the facilities for fire protection in
communities in Massachusetts and other New England states and
sets insurance rates for fire insurance companies For many
years the Association has advised that a third fire station be
located in the southerly part of town to provide faster response
to fires in that area than can be made from the existing stations
The Association has made the same recommendation to this Committee
The Committee has reviewed the present fire protection cover-
age of the town provided by the personnel and equipment housed
in the two existing fire stations It has made a study of the
number and location of existing buildings in the area which could
be served from a new station situated in the vicinity of the
reservoir on Marrett Road In addition, the number and loca-
tion of fifes occurring in certain sections of this area since I
1952 have been analyzed Also, the Committee has considered
the effect of future development of other areas of the town on
the fire department housing program

At the present time, there are several matters under con-
sideration, bUt not yet finalized, wb ch xray have some effect
on the fn- e fir. rrctee ion p. ogram of the town The most
imporuai t of these are
1 The reconstruction of Route 2
2 The traffic survey being made by the Town Traffic
Comnittoe
3 The proposed construction of a road from Wood Street to
Bedford Street with its effect on the development of
the industrial arca
ij. The proposed extension of Eldred Street to Grove Street
5 Additional residential subdivisions
The Committee feels that a decision on the question of
whether to construct a third fire station in the reservoir area
should not be made until the foregoing matters have reached a
more complete state of development
Accordingly, the Committee recommends that the town adopt
a vote at the 1957 Annual Town Mooting to continue the Addi-
tional Fire Station Committee for the purpose of making a
further study and report to a subsequent Town Meeting but not
later than the March 1958 Annual Town Meeting
