HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-01-24-FHHR-HSC-min-joint.pdf Joint Meeting of the Fair Housing and Human Relations Committee and the Human Services Committee January 24 2001 at the Senior Center in Lexington, MA Present: (FHHRC) Margaret Cole and Tom Montanan, Co-Chairs Florence Baturin, Jeffrey Collins, Beverly Goodridge, Jean Hibino, Chan-Sheng Ting, Jed Snyder Absent: Michelle Ekanem, Pat Taylor Present (HSC) Barbara Ciampa and Helen Cravis, Co-Chairs Steve Kelly Roslyn Gittleman, Christine Yedica. Absent:Macy Delong, Robert Dentler, Khalil Khatri. Selectman Liaison: Cathy Abbott Staff: Steve Baran Guests: Heather Sweeny Social Services Director; Peg Jemisen. The meeting was called to order at 8:55 PM. All present gave their names. Steve Baran requested that he be relieved of the duties of Clerk of the two committees in order that he be freed to help the committees in other ways. It was decided to rotate the Clerk's responsibilities among members of the committees. Jed Snyder volunteered to serve as Clerk for this meeting. Those present gave a brief self-introduction focusing by most on their own particular areas of interest and/or expertise. There was a general brief presentation by Tom Montanari, Co-Chair of FHHRC about some of the past and current activities of the FHHRC by way of opening a more complete line of communication and understanding with the HSC. There was a similar presentation by Barbara Ciampa, Co-Chair of HSC concerning their activities. Domestic violence, mental retardation, and accessibility to services among other issues) have been focused upon by the HSC This committee regularly has guest speakers. They are planning to focus on mental health issues in the immediate future. There followed some discussion of the relationships and charges of the two committees. The minutes of the HSC of 12/27/2000 were approved as distributed. The minutes of the FHHRC of 12/21/2000 were approved with the following changes: Jed Snyder's name was added to the present roll. Chang-Sheng Ting was listed as a guest but he had already become a full member of the committee. FHHRC actions regarding correspondence presented for ile.view at the meeting of 12/21/2000 was reported. Steve Baran indicated that a letter to a purported Hate-Crime victim had been hand delivered by a Lexington police officer No response has been reported from that individual. The draft entitled Unity and Civility in Diversity that had been initially presented at 12/21/2000 meeting was reported to have been revised and copies were distributed at this meeting (1/24/2001). This piece will be presented to the Lexington Minuteman for an upcoming issue in the near future. 1 It was suggested that the minutes of the two committees be dispensed to each other's clerk or chair for future enhancement of communication between these two committees.
