FAIR HOUSING AND HUMAN RELATIONS COMMITTEE
MINUTES
12/21/00
Present: Florence Bahrain;Margaret Cole,Co-Chair;Jeffrey Collins;Beverly Goodridge;Tom Montanan,Co-Chair;
Chang-Sheng Ting,guest;Cathy Abbott,Liaison Selectman;Steve Baran,staff and recorder.
Absent: Michelle Ekanem;Jean Y Hibino;Pat Taylor
Minutes of 11/15/00
The minutes of 11/15/00 were approved except for the spelling of Glenn Garber's name(Glenn instead of Glen).
Hate Crime Victim
Florence Baturin's draft of a letter to be sent through the Police Department to a recent hate crime victim was reviewed
and approved with one exception.The Committee was standing by to offer its `support' instead of"services. Copies
will be sent to the Board of Selectmen and the No Place for Hate steering committee.At Jed Snyder's suggestion,Tom
Montanan and Peg Cole will verify with the Chief of Police that the incident characterized as a hate crime in the
Minuteman was,indeed,correctly identified as such.
Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical School
Pat Taylor had expressed concern about the atmosphere at Minuteman Vocational since a friend of her son had informed
him about skinheads being active there. Pat had said she would look into this further by talking with the principal.
Civility
The committee reviewed a draft of a letter to be sent to the Minuteman on the subject of civility. The letter was referred
to Peg Cole so that she might complete it.
Affordable Housing
It was agreed that affordable housing would continue to be the focus and agenda for the Fair Housing Committee during
the coming year.Peg asked what action the committee would be taking,and Tom was interested in exploring what
available model was pertinent.Action could be taken in relation to Met State,Katandin Woods,getting on boards of
such committees as LexHab and the Lexington Housing Authority,hiring an affordable housing coordinator and running
for Town meeting as well as forming alliances.Peg Cole expressed an interest in running for Housing Authority Cathy
Abbott noted that if Peg were a member of an elected board,she could not continue on the Fair Housing Committee.
Joint session with the Human Services Committee
At the invitation of the Human Services Committee,which is concerned with the matter of overlapping jurisdictions with
the Fair Housing Committee,there will be a joint session beginning at 7 45 p.m. on January 24.Minutes of both
committees and an agenda will be distributed.

Jed informed the committee that he planned to continue as a member.
