Absent: Kathryn Davis;Michelle Ekanem;Beverly Goodridge;Jed Snyder;Cathy Abbott,Liaison Selectman Minutes of 5/17/00 The minutes were approved. Denial of right to vote Tom had written letters to Jeanne Krieger suggesting that some action should be taken to bring closure to the denial of right to vote episode. The issue was that the Selectmen did not seem to reveal an awareness of there having been a denial of a fundamental right to vote(treating the issue as one of a lack of sensitivity and respect for an individual of another race.Jeanne Krieger's letter suggested that the matter be closed without commenting on this point. Later,the Coalition of Racial Equality encouraged more people to participate as voting officials. Tom applied and was accepted.He related how his experience as a voting official was helpful in better understanding what had happened in the denial of the right to vote experience. Affordable housing—AAUW program Florence Baturin discussed the organization of a regional seminar organized by the AAUW The Fair Housing and Human Relations was invited to act as one of the sponsors of the event and to participate in its planning.Peg Cole was in favor of some more immediate action being taken such as bringing together the groups in Lexington.Lacking a quorum, it was agreed to call an emergency meeting to discuss sponsorship. Candidates for membership on the Fair Housing and Human Relations Committee Pat Taylor had previously indicated an interest in joining the committee,and it was understood that she was sending in an application for member ship.Jeff Collins,an attorney and civil litigant,said he was interested in joining.He has sent an application to the Selectmen.Florence Baturin agreed to call Chang-Sheng Ting to determine if she was interested in joining the Committee. Attendance Peg Cole agreed to call Beverly Ekanem to urge her attendance at meetings. Tom Montanan agreed to call Michelle Ekanem to urge her attendance.
